I heard a CD of a Passionist giving a parish mission in which he said the Holy See dispatched Luther to hell. But, the Passionist asserts, Luther is ‘back,’ the excommunication has been lifted. True or false?

This priest doesn’t know what he’s talking about on several counts:

(1) The Holy See did NOT “dispatch Luther to hell”

(2) Excommunication applies to the living-- it is a canonical penalty. Luther is dead. There is nothing to “lift” nor has anyone done such “lifting.”

Luther has received the particular judgment and his fate is known only to God.

It wasn’t a priest. Hence this thought…🤷

I don’t think the “Holy See” “dispatches people to hell.” Catholics, correct me if I am wrong!

The excommunication on Luther was recanted/lifted/rescinded by John Paul II.

I forget which year he did it in. It might have been the 500 years anniversary of Luther.
