Is lying always wrong and sinful?

Lying is always wrong , which is a different statement to lying is a sin.

Is lying a sin different to lying being wrong?? I was always tought by my parents that if you do something wrong its a sin.
 
If I was a Polish Catholic sheltering Jews during the Holocaust, and some Nazis knocked on the door asking if any Jews were in the house, then I would have an obligation to say no.

As an article on CatholicCulture.com told me.

But only in very rare cases is lying ever acceptable.

There is not a single instance in reality where one is obligated to do an intrinsically evil act. Such articles have no authority.

“Yes, there are Jews hiding in the basement…go kill them” is definitely intrinsically evil. In this situation, not answering at all is the same as answering yes.

Would that make a difference? I didnt think it would make a difference. If i do some thing wrong then arent i sinning? So if tell a murderer that my sister is hiding in the basement that would be wrong wouldnt it? Or would god want me to tell the truth?

Jesus refers to himself as the ‘Truth’ so surely lying is against God. Do you really need anything more to tell you it’s a sin? Anything else is the work of Satan including all this nonsense of white lies and good lies and lying to be kind etc.
 
No, that paragraph just says that we may have just cause to not answer. It does not say we can answer untruthfully.

A person may have no right to know is I have a pen handy.
 
This is were it gets rather sticky in my mind. The classic case of how to respond to the Nazis at the door asking if there are any Jews being hidden. Many will say that you may use a technique called mental rrservation, here is a Wikipedia article on the matter:


But it is quite easy to come up with scenarios where that seems quite insufficient. Indeed St John XXIIII was known to have issued many false baptismal certificates to Jews during the war to protect them.

But what we do know is that these cases of life and death do not happen often in our normal lives, as such the strict teaching of the Church should certainly be followed during our normal lives.

Oh i see. No thats ok. My parents didnt instruct me. They just told me what they thought was true. They said i have to make up my mind myself about some things. So is lying a sin different to lying is wrong? It seems the same to me.

So if your having a party and someone comes that you didnt invite and they say i hope you dont mind? Youd say yes I do mind you cant come in. I think that would be pretty rude. I bet god woukd think it was rude. I think if you told a white lie then theyd be happy and so would everyone else. Someone said that you should think what would jesus do. Would jesus say yes i do mind and you cant come in?
 
Then it would be better to let him in ( why it is so important he doesn’t joy the party anyway? ) and you try to make him understand that he shouldn’t come without invitation next time.
If you do it right you will not be rude to the person and he will understand

So what if he says are you pleased to see me. It makes no sense to make people unhappy by telling the truth when everyone is happy if you tell a little white lie. Telling the truth can be the wrong thing to do sometimes. It can hurt peoples feelings.
 
Good example of this is when Judas asked Jesus if he can join him. Jesus looks at him knowing he’ll betray him and says “you shall know a tree by its fruit…stay…join us”

In the 1977 Jesus of Nazareth scene it’s so ominous the way Jesus says it. Judas is creeped out but happy at same time.

No it was two questions. Do you mind if i come in and are you pleased to see me. Maybe youd say yes you can come in. And then when he says are you pleased to see me youd say no. That would not be polite.

What’s rude about being honest? Is it your fault if someone takes offense when you tell them the truth? God never cared if someone got offended by the truth, so I don’t think he’d think it’s rude.
