Is Madonna an acceptable name for a Catholic girl?

First off, I am in no way trying to show appreciation for the popular singer, her reputation notwithstanding. But I was wondering if Madonna is an acceptable first or middle name for a girl. My wife and I are expecting our fifth child (our first daughter!) in October and are trying to think of names. We live in the USA, and I am not sure if culturally it is acceptable here. For instance, I have never heard of an English speaking person naming their son Jesus, but it is very common in Spanish speaking countries. Is there a similar “rule” in English for Madonna?

If so, is it then acceptable to allow her to be nicknamed Donna for everyday use? I think I would always call her Madonna, but others may not. I am a new Catholic this past Easter, and wanted to reflect the intercession I feel Our Lady made on my behalf during my journey to the Church for our first child since my conversion.

Actually the popular singer of the same name’s real name is “Madonna” and presumably was given to her by her Catholic parents in honor of the Blessed Mother. Although there is nothing wrong with Catholic parents naming a girl “Madonna,” since the name is now so inextricably linked in our culture with the pop singer Madonna, it may be better to choose another name in honor of the Blessed Mother for your daughter (e.g., Regina, Virginia, Dolores, Rosemary). If you do choose “Madonna” though, the nickname “Donna” would be a prudent means of distancing your daughter’s name from the singer’s.
