Mortal sin requires full consent and knowledge, so manslaughter is likely not to be mortal. But is it still a sin, at least venial?
For example, a pilot thought that a problem on the plane was minor and thus made wrong decisions. This has led to a fatal plane crash. If he survived, he would be charged with manslaughter by the court. But will God hold him responsible for the deaths, and has he sinned for carelessly killing the passemgers? Another example would be a teacher scolding a student over his/her grades. The student then became desperate and committed suicide. Yet the teacher did not expect the student to have such response to her scolding. Is the teacher responsible for the student’s death, and has she sinned?
