i’ve seen alot of hard-core Christians sing it on TBN, even the dude clay aiken from american idol sang it. which is more catholic ava maria or mary did you know ? just curious. thanks.

“Mary did you know” is a Contemporary Christian song, and, although it’s sang in some Catholic churches at Christmas time, it’s very controversial among Catholics, because one of the lines can be construed as denying the Immaculate Conception (the one about "did you know the baby would one day save you? or something like that? I’ve only heard the song a couple of times).
“Ava Maria” is DEFINATELY “more” Catholic! (I’d say it’s “completely” Catholic!)

I am a music minister in my parish and we sing “Mary Did You Know”. I actually changed the verse “this child that you delivered, would soon deliver you” to “had first delivered you”.

i was going through hellllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll one day, being attacked by evil thoughts and i was talking to my priest in his rectory and he said help us to be more like the Holy’est PERSON who’s ever lived, Mary. i was like huh ? would’nt that be Jesus ? he said no because Jesus IS God AND man. anyway how can he save the person who he developed his human body in. it makes sense to me now cause im catholic christian. but whatever’s clever.

next to this song it says This has always been one of my favorite Christmas songs. Mary had no idea that her son would one day rule all nations and be Lord. Let us all not forget the true reason we celebrate Christmas.

No, it would actually be the first part ("…would one day deliver/save you"), as, according to the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception, Jesus had already saved Mary in anticipation of her role as His Mother. She was already free from sin. Whether she “knew” or not, I don’t know. I don’t think that’s been defined/debated (like whether Christ knew He was God prior to the resurrection, which, apparently some people, including priests, think he didn’t!

I suppose an interpretation of “will soon deliver you” could be that upon her death, she would be delivered into Paradise. Note that it does not say “save”, although if it did, the song writer’s intended meaning would be more clear…“soon save” would seem to be against the dogma of the Immaculate Conception…although again, if the writer meant upon her death that she would be “saved”, thinking that a person (any person) becomes saved or not saved only upon their death, that would be “less inconsistant” with Catholic Theology than if the writer meant that she was not preserved from original sin.No, it would actually be the first part ("…would one day deliver/save you"), as, according to the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception, Jesus had already saved Mary in anticipation of her role as His Mother. I have wondered why the Immaculate Conception dogma is so basic to the RCC.
As a protestant, I have no problem with Mary having the sinless Christ. Its plain in scripture, the sinful nature came from Adam because he knew what he was doing but Eve was deceived.
Christ’s nature came from and was a holy God.
If Mary had an earthly father she had a sinful nature and needed a savior.
If she had a sinless nature then she had a heavenly father and that makes her a deity.
simple as that

as far as did Mary know she was having the savior? of course she did, she was told directly as was Joesph. Not besides the fact that all women knew and understood that a virgin would conceive God’s son.
Note the phrase “bewail their virginity” when a Jewish maiden got married in scripture and other texts. They grieved for their virginity because they knew that would disqualify from having the savior.
Although there is the view, she would have thought he was a political savior at best and a religious savior for Israel at worst.

You know, its really a beautiful song. It gave me pause at first. Even after changing the one controversial verse from “would soon deliver you” to “had first delivered you”, the whole theme of “did you know” still kind of bothered me. I got around it due to the fact that the question is never anwered. Maybe she did, maybe she didn’t. We don’t know exactly what Mary knew even though she knew she was having God’s son. Even when speaking of Jesus, scripture tells that he “grew in wisdom and knowledge”. He didn’t know everything as a baby, but had to learn as he grew. I assume she did too. Anyway, the song doesn’t say that she didn’t know, it just asks the question.

So you believe in original sin? That’s good. Do you not also believe that if God chose to create someone and preserve that person from original sin (because she would be the mother of his sinless Son) that He could not have done so?
Do you remember when the Arc of the Covenant was being carried and everyone was warned not to touch it. It was holy because it contained things touched by God. It started to fall and several men put their hands up to prevent it from falling. When they touched it they fell over dead. It was that holy.
Mary’s womb did not contain things “touched” by God, but contained God himself. If the Arc was so holy that you couldn’t touch it, because it contained things touched by God, how holy did the vessel (Mary) that actually contained God himself have to be? Mary is the Arc of the Covenant and was preserved from sin because of her special purpose, a purpose given to no other human being.
