Is Mary's status really as great as we've been making it?

I worry sometimes about Mary being declared “the Co-Redemptrix”. This is not what I was taught in my Catholic instruction classes when I was a kid (back in the late 60’s and throughout the 70’s). (Of course, that’s true of a lot of things.) Yes, we were taught Mary is the Mother of God, and we were to honor her for the role she played in bringing Jesus Christ to our world. But we were also taught that Jesus alone is our Savior and our Redeemer. These days we seem to be elevating her to a status that is reserved for Jesus alone. One of my non-Catholic friends, a “born-again pagan”, has told me that fellow pagans see this as a way for Christians to “rediscover the Goddess” aspect in God, and perhaps we should start calling Mary “Her” with a capital “h” instead of just “her”. I told her this is exactly what I’m afraid we’re doing.

I’m not trying to “dis” (as they say these days) Mary, but is it possible we’ve gone too far? I’ve even read that some of the saints have said that if ignore Christ’s mother, Christ will not acknowledge us and we will not be saved. That just doesn’t sound like Christ to me, who said, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Light, and whomsoever believes in me will never die.” Note that He didn’t mention His mother anywhere in there.

I would appreciate any insight anyone can give in this matter. Thank you.
