Is Mass at the FSSP and the SSPX the same for those that have been to both?

I’ve have attended both, but haven’t attended an SSPX chapel for about five years. The only difference that I recall is that there were far more responses done by the laity, in joining in with the vocalization of some of the server responses than the FSSP allows for. At least that was the case at the SSPX chapel that I attended. Otherwise, the Mass itself is the same.

the laity say more in the SSPX?
Yes, at least at the SSPX chapel that I attended. I think it may vary from chapel to chapel though. I wasn’t even aware of the difference until I stopped attending the SSPX and began attending the FSSP parish. The FSSP Mass was so much…quieter. It took awhile for me to get used to it.

I thought our mass is very quiet. I go to SSPX I must be use to it. I will have observe better this Sunday.

If you go to SSPX and are still considering becoming a priest, then you should definitely apply to be a FSSP or Institute Christ King priest

God Bless.
I am still thinking about it. I am very weak in book work so I will maybe have to check them all out. I think institute of Christ requires two languages that would be beyond me. The FSSP might be a better fit since they don’t teach school but I would need massive help in Latin. I don’t know if they could give me that much help in Latin. With the SSPX I still need massive Latin help and they teach school which I could only do in a low grade with my skill set. I love the Latin groups but because of my academic problems I might be forced into OF even though I feel it would not be a good fit. I am very Traditional and love the Latin groups.

If you go Diocesan you can still the the EF or do the OF with lots of reverence like they do on EWTN

Disclaimer: I don’t intend this to be a endorsement of the SSPX, or to encourage attendance at their Chapels.

But for the OP, in short, yes.

The level of Dialogue Masses that take place vary from venue to venue, both within the SSPX and the FSSP. It depends on the priest’s preferences. At my FSSP parish, we have had priests who prefer both, and we simply readjust for each.

The silence at a low Mass is beautiful, but many folks, depending on the parish, are not sure of what the folks in the pew are to do; so many respond with the altar boys. We were discussing this with our FSSP priest who said there are no cut and dried rubrics for the laity. Tradition seems to be the rule. In fact Pope Pius XII, encouraged the use of the dialog Mass.

But basically, tradition says that the low Mass is silent except for the priest and altar boys. The High Masses are a different story. Responses and singing are pretty well encouraged at the parts that are not the priest’s.

Best advise is to do what those around you are doing. God gave us a set of eyes and ears. 👍

I have found them to be pretty much the same. Some are more quiet than others.

What I have noticed is a focus on a “sermon”, rather than a homily, if that makes sense to anyone. There is a definite bent towards “teaching” - more than I usually find at a diocesan TLM.

Hello everyone! It’s been a while! 🙂

I don’t regularly attend the TLM, but I have attended both FSSP and SSPX Masses, generally high or sung Masses. My experience has been the same as others have stated: at the SSPX Mass, the congregation was much more vocal, singing or saying the responses. At the FSSP parish, the congregation tends to be silent, except for a few mumbled responses.

This has been my experience as well. The SSPX seemed like there were more responses. And the sermon was geared to families, parenting and life. The FSSP Mass I went to was quiet and occasionally does not have a “homily” or “sermon”

The level of quiet was higher at the FSSP but there were many young children at the SSPX so that may have been a factor.

I go to low Mass at SSPX so we don’t say anything. I see what you mean about the high mass at the FSSP and SSPX.
