Is masterbation a sin?

Yes it is - the seriousness depends on the circumstances, and it is something to be discussed with your priest in confession (don’t worry, it’d be about the most commonly confessed of all sins).

If he tells you it’s not at all a sin (and sadly some priests wrongly do), then point him to this section of the Catechism:

"2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action."138 “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of "the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved."139

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects’ moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability."

Note that minimum moral culpability doesn’t mean NO culpability - so it IS always a sin, the question is how serious of a sin.

And yes you can help yourself. Take it from someone who used to do the same, far too often, and has stopped. Thanks to the grace of God, frequent confession, plenty of prayer and very careful avoidance (as much as possible) of anything by way of music, reading material, internet material, tv or movies that is sexually suggestive. You don’t need that trash infiltrating your brain.

It’s really not easy to stop once you’ve got into the habit, any more than it is for a smoker to stop smoking, but it is both every bit as possible and much more crucial for your eternal health than quitting the cigarettes for your physical health. The thing in both cases is don’t worry if you can’t quit cold turkey - make your aim just to go that one extra day without.

Search for this topic and you’ll find a lot of threads.

This is a sin and you must fight against it.

Pray the Rosary for purity. It will help defeat temptations and sin.

I obviously disagree with them
You are free to believe what you want.

However, if you are a Catholic you are committing a mortal sin everytime you engage in this behaviour. This is true whether you admit it or not. The Church is very clear on this. Do not try to justify your weakness by stating that it is only a venial sin.

If you have engaged in this activity, I encourage you to go to confession.
