Is masturbation a mortal sin under these circumstances?

Lets say that you try your absolute best to avoid masturbation or fornication. You go for as long as you can without giving in to temptation. But then, your genitals start to hurt from not releasing. If physical discomfort results from not masturbating and you do it ONLY for the sole purpose of alleviating the pain, is it still mortal sin?
Masturbation is a mortal sin because of lust and selfish sexual gratification. If done for the reason given above, is it still mortal sin? I’d hope God would see why it was done and understand the intention. What are your thoughts?
I know this is TMI, but I’ve never had a wet dream. Some guys don’t have them. If I’m one of them, then how will my body release on its own?

As for the moral side of this, I would talk to your Confessor, since your culpability might be lowered. I would also talk to your doctor about the lack of wet dreams. She/He may be able to do something about it.

Agree with the above…you need to take this to your confessor AND to your doctor…

I am not aware of any medically recognized, physical condition where one’s genitalia would physically hurt unless one ejaculates…
Is there such a medical condition?? One that would present itself even though there is no “stimulation” applied? - I am truly curious…

I thought about googling this question but couldn’t think of how to phrase it so as to avoid getting a load of porn etc mixed in…

Peace

I always thought it was the lust that was the sin, not the act itself…because you cannot “act” without lust.

Yes. It’s a mortal sin.

I also don’t believe such a condition actually exists.

God Bless

I probably shouldn’t say cannot and should say seldom or rarely. I’m sure one can do the act without lust…but that’s like trying to survive walking out in a thunderstorm covered in tin-foil and standing in a pool of water.

no,i would not want to google that either ! 😃
My mom, who is not at all computer savvy, nonetheless tries periodically to appear knowledgeable about “computer stuff.” Well, at our last family get-together a question came up about what the store hours were for the new Dick’s Sporting Goods that opened in the next town… and my mom helpfully suggested googling the store name (though she only referred to it by the first word in the name).

I (and those nearest to where I was sitting) am just thankful I wasn’t drinking anything at the time!

I don’t know whether or not it is a condition or something, but there is a phenomenon where if one becomes aroused and doesn’t complete the act, pain can result. It has a somewhat vulgar name in the vernacular though, and I don’t know if giving the name here would be inappropriate. It doesn’t contain any obscenities, but it is somewhat vulgar.

Yes, and I think that “phenomenon” is BS. It’s something men made up to try and convince gullible women to sleep with them. “Oh honey, we can’t stop now, I’ll be in pain.” Manipulative clap trap.

Men often wake up with an erection, which goes away when they pee. No pain results from not “completing” the act.

God Bless

The problem is that the act itself is disordered so there are no intentions or circumstances that can legitimate it.

Now whether or not it’s mortal is not something I can comment on. It depends on a lot of factors. Talk to a priest about it.

Your body does not “require” release. It is perfectly capable of resorbing semen on its own, and does so fairly consistently.

As I’m sure we (men) are all aware, unsatisfied arousal can lead to physical discomfort and even pain. Now whether or not our OP is getting himself aroused regularly, perhaps because of inattentive stewardship of his eyes or thoughts, isn’t something to comment on, but I think it’s a subtext missing from a lot of these kinds of posts. People go around complaining how hard the no-masturbation rule is, never realizing that it’s easy (well, easier) to handle if you keep your eyes and your mind where they belong, which some of them just refuse to do, and prefer instead to rationalize away (“I can’t help looking at boobs!” Yes you can).

Starting your post with “Lets say” sounds like the preface to something you’re attempting to justify. Why even interject fornication? Its not like you’re trying to avoid a plague, this is an act you would consent & commit to. I ain’t buyin’ what you’re sellin’ :nope:

That being said, if there is in fact such a condition as you describe you need to seek medical advice ASAP instead of probing CAF. I think God would send the right medical professionals into your life to assist you long before he would “understand the intention” you have which potentially leads you into sin.

I do not believe there is such a medical condition. In my view anyone asserting that is simply looking for an excuse to justify sinning (i.e. masturbating).

My understanding of healthy anatomy, from a year of anatomy and physiology (taught as part of a nursing curriculum), myself majoring in medical physics:

  1. *]The male body does not need to expel sperm: Unused sperm are broken down and resorbed by the body.
*]Pain in the genitals arises from vasocongestion (blood filling the genitals’ blood vessels), which occurs from prolonged sexual arousal.

If you are experiencing prolonged sexual arousal, and hence vasocongestion, simply from normal daily activities (i.e., you’re not looking at lustful material), then I recommend seeing a doctor. See a physician if your arousal problem is mechanical in origin; see a psychologist or psychiatrist if your arousal is mental in origin.

Masturbation, even for pain relief, I see as disordered, as God designed the male seed to be resorbed or else as a gift to the woman. Hence, I think it would be better to offer the pain to the Lord in prayer and present your body as a holy and living sacrifice, as St. Paul recommends, rather than seek pain relief – if it’s the kind of vasocongestion that relieves itself over time (again: talk with your doctor – priapism is different and can be a medical emergency). That being said, talk with your doctor and a spiritual director … Don’t seek advice from strangers on the street. 👍

As others have explained, masturbation, even under the stated circumstances, is gravely sinful. Whether it is actually a mortal sin depends on several subjective factors. While you can discuss it with a priest, there is a very real risk you may describe it to him in a manner which does not accurately represent you state of mind at the time and be given an inaccurate answer.

My theory is “better safe than sorry”: if you commit an act that is, or may be, gravely sinful, assume that it is and confess it as soon as possible – and don’t receive Holy Communion until then. If you assume a venial sin is mortal, you lose nothing and you gain graces from the confession; if you assume a mortal sin is venial and don’t confess it, …
