my friend is a guy and he asked me if masturbation was a sin. i said yes, he then asked how serious of a sin is it? i couldn’t answer him because i have heard so many different answers like yes it is always a mortal sin; and others like, only if you are having a dirty mind will doing it, makes it a mortal sin. i don’t really know. is there a straight forward answer or does it depend on the person’s state of mind? can you help clear things up for me so i may properly inform my friend about this issue.

God bless you and thank-you

It is grave matter since it is an offense against chastity and the sanctity of the body as well as selfish and self-serving. There are many scriptures that support this :
Onan in Gen 38:9, Matt 5:28-29, Eph 5:3,1Th 4:2-8, Ro 6:13, Leviticus 15:16-18, Leviticus 22:4, Gal 5:22, 2 Peter 1, Mark 7:21-23, 2 Timothy 3:1-4.

The person who does not realize that it is grave matter may be less culpable of it and escape mortal sin through ignorance.

Also a person who is addicted to it and is trying to resist it but is unable to overcome it may also not be as culpable assuming they did not know better when they first engaged i this.

The key thing here is knowing the conditions necessary for committing a grave sin:
Conditions for mortal/grave sin
Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter
Mortal sin is committed with full knowledge of the sinner
Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner

There are some who say that within the marriage context it is not grave matter if performed in the context of the marital embrace and used as an aid in completing the
conjugal act as long as the end objective is not self-pleasure and it is made a unitive act such that the male completes with his spouse such that the act may be creative.

Three conditions must be met for an action to be a mortal sin: 1. grave matter; 2. full knowledge; and 3. free consent of the will.

Masturbation is grave matter. The *Catechism of the Catholic Church *(2352) says, “[M]asturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.”

Knowledging this and still freely engaging in the action would constitute a mortal sin.

However, such things as “affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety, or other psychological or social factors” affect the free consent of the will and, if present, may reduce the action to something less than a mortal sin. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2352)

CCC 2352 By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. “Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action.” “The deliberate use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose.” For here sexual pleasure is sought outside of “the sexual relationship which is demanded by the moral order and in which the total meaning of mutual self-giving and human procreation in the context of true love is achieved.”

Yada yada yada show me in the Bible where masturbation is STRICTLY addressed let alone condemned as a mortal sin. All this sin definition venial, mortal ect … is man made laws and order not God’s or He would have “specifically” addressed it. Just like purgatory, where in the world ! in the Bible did God teach us about that? Another made up Vatican issue. Just stick with what the Bible teaches, that’s hard enough with all the twisted accounts (trial of Jesus being TOTALLY out of the context of Jewish and Roman customs and Law at the time for one), and not additional man made laws, rules and gibberish about purgatory, what a crock. Just because the Vatican had the military power to make their opinion and church design the rule, doesn’t make it right. Another example, marriage for priests. Most the Apostles were married, but for a priest it is voodoo because the Vatican says so, under who’s direction and authority are they representing that directive? Not God’s. Yep, theirs, seems the Vatican thinks it can improve God’s Word with their hoopla. I don’t care about theirs, I care about God’s, and it is quite obvious throughout history, that the Vatican is a bully, guilty of heinous crimes and genocide, twisting the Truth of the faith to suit their needs, and a poor representative of Jesus original words and teachings as outlined by the early Christians. I am supposed to listen to them with blind faith when they make up it is wrong to not experience sexual release of built up sperm, which has to be periodically released and replaced biologically (why we have wet dreams if you don’t do it yourself), through masturbation, you gotta be kidding me. Maybe the Church should worry about their molesting priests and their banning from the Church instead on wrist slapping and passing to another parish to continue. I can show them in the Bible where THAT is wrong, but they can’t tell me where quote unquote masturbation is, yeah, right … not. and if I masturbate, and you say that it means I love myself more than God, you need to buzz off Jack, YOU HAVE NO IDEA OF MY RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD.

And answer me why 50 years of being a Catholic, everytime I go to a new CATHOLIC Church, every priest has a different answer about masturbation, from it’s not a sin, to it’s not a serious sin, or not as bad as other sins, to mortal sin (unfounded) or my body will start to rot away … they can’t even give a uniform answer if it is right or wrong, I can even get 5 club members to recite the same verbatim, but the Church can’t ? CAN ANYBODY SEE SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE ? Like the Vatican is a poor leader, poorly preparing people for eternity. If masturbation is so wrong, why was I never taught that in 12 years of Catholic grade school and high school. How come NO Homily ever addressed it, the Church kept quiet until I did it, then all of a sudden all hell breaks loose and you got your fingers jabbed in my chest screaming sinner … I say worry about how you run your religion “business” empire which is robbing Christians of money and proper eternal preparations, shove your extra-Biblical doctrine and stupid rules (priests not marrying for example) and let us people live in the peace of the Bible, not the wrath of your non-based accusations and fantastical places (purgatory).

Jesus is Lord
Allah Akbar (and that is coming from ME, a white, Anglo Saxon American Catholic, not a Muslim or Islamic, if you don’t understand why I can say it without offending God and fellow Catholics and Christians, then you really are lost, and not able to bother me with your anti-masturbation hangups)

You might wanna change your stated religion to something else other than ‘Catholic’, because you obviously don’t seem to be.

Let me ask this.
Can a person (male or female) accidentally masturbate?
Silly question huh.

If one knows that masturbation is a sin, that is, it is offensive to God, and does it anyway it is a grave matter and thus a mortal sin. Whether one sees the act itself as a large matter or a small matter is less relevant.

Someone reacently said - If we aim for Heaven and miss, there is Purgatory as a backup. If we aim for Purgatory and miss there is no backup.

When we ask whether a sin, that is an offence against God, is venial or mortal, we are aiming at purgatory, Maybe you should ask your friend what he is aiming for.

Hope this helps some.

Peace
James

Who are you kidding? With your attitude you are not even remotely Catholic. Drop the pretence.

You really should learn more about what Christians are before you post ignornace like this. 😉

The second post should have been more than enough for you and everyone. 😃
