I’m not sure of everything that has been said throughout this thread (seems to be a bit of a lightning rod of a subject). Anyway, here’s what I have to say on the subject.
First, I think it’s been established that it is definitely mortally sinful to masturbate. It’s done for gratification and that alone.
That being said, if you look at society, it makes it more difficult to deal with such a habit because it appears that the same disorder that causes this action is the disorder that causes pre-marital sex and contraception. The act of anything sexual in nature is reduced to an action for a couple to do when they feel a closeness to one another, whether or not what is fealt is actually there.
The one thing to focus on is that this is a disorder. In some cases, it’s something used to express a level of closeness that, when a couple is not ready, causes harm. Because of this attitude toward sex, it’s easy to see how the attitude can lead one to the thought of “why can’t I masturbate, I’m not hurting anyone?”
The harm comes in the disorder, a disorder that leads to people thinking they should be able to do what they want as long as those involved are okay with it, which leads to other disorders which are just as serious in activity but the disorder is felt more easily, the disorder of rape, of feeling an entitlement, and even of anger or hate.
When you see these things, you can step it back to simple acts which do not have as noticeable appearance of harm.
This is not a judgment on anyone but a way to get the thought away from the act and toward the sin of the action. If your focus is love of others, then there should be no room for such an action.
Think about it. I tried to condense my post because there’s so much more to say on the subject that will show the harm. The fact is that masturbating is just one form of disordered sex.
Finally, imagine the problems that would be solved if people did not see the act of sex as something of an entitlement and, instead, something to be expressed with one’s spouse and only one’s spouse. The thoughts toward adultery would be more difficult; the thoughts toward “I’m entitled to the feeling because I’m human” wouldn’t make sense: the thoughts of we’re so close, it must be right would not cause such pain when a couple who became close break up; the thoughts of “I can’t fight the feeling” wouldn’t make sense anymore; and the thoughts of the FEELING of it being more important than the COMPLETE EXPRESSION OF LOVE that sex is within marriage. After all, why should two people who do not have a complete spiritual, emotional and mental connection; why should they be able to have the complete physical connection of sex? In the same way, if it’s an expression of complete love toward another, then there’s no reason for the habit of masturbation beyond personal confusion, a disordered thought.
