Section 1857 of the Catechism states “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter…” and in 1858 defines grave matter as being specified by the 10 Commandments. Section 2181 states that, “Those who fail in this obligation [weekly mass] commit a grave sin.” In section 1472 it states that Grave Sin is subject to eternal punishment. Does this mean that missing mass (failing to keep the Lord’s Day holy-- thus breaking on of the 10 Commandments) is a Mortal Sin punishable by eternal damnation, if we die before repentance? Must we, therefore, make a confession prior to receiving Eucharist every time after missing one weekly mass?
When I make confession, I try to include as far as possible, the general breadth and depth of my sins if not the specifics, however, I have never confessed to missing a specific mass. Based on this alone, is my salvation currently in question?
