This weekend I was away with my girlfriend and there was absolutely no way I could attend Mass. I wanted to, but I just couldn’t, given many circumstances beyond my control. Is this still considered a sin and am I required to go to confession?

If a person has just cause (e.g., illness, the care of others, an inability to find a church) it is not a sin to miss Mass. Whether your reasons constituted just cause, I cannot say. I recommend going to confession and asking the priest whether your reasons constituted just cause. A confessor does not just absolve sin but can also help us determine whether there has been a sin committed.
