Is missing Mass really a Mortal Sin?

Is missing Mass occasionally really a mortal sin? I have heard it is and can not understand why? To never go, yes. But to miss here and there, I don’t have a problem with it.
 
Just because you don’t have a problem with it doesn’t mean the church doesn’t. Yes, it really is a mortal sin.
 
You religion is listed as other. So you are not Catholic?

Catholics are obliged to assist at Mass (or even Vespers for some eastern Catholic Churches) on all Sundays and five to ten feasts, depending upon the jurisdiction. This is clearly stated by the Church.

If one has to miss for a serious reason, such as illness or cannot get out of work, then there is no obligation, and the time begins at 4PM (USA) on the previous day through midnight of the next day.

So yes, it is a serious sin to knowingly and intentionally skip, even once, when the obligation exists.

I wish someone could explain WHY it is a mortal sin? If I miss mass I am not hurting anyone. Again, if I NEVER went to church, I could understand it, but occasionally miss because I am too tired…???

There are legitimate reasons where a person may be prohibited from going to mass, fatigue is not one of them. What if God is too tired when you die, is it ok for Him to take that moment off so you can go to, you know, the other place? Just a thought…😉

(“IF”) your tiredness is the result of a serious medical condition under your doctors immediate care, then there is sufficient reason of not going to Mass.
But plain fatigue…No excuse.

Missing Mass is willfully choosing our schedules over God. If we cannot attend Mass because of our busy schedules, that is sending the message that we are too busy for God. If you are unable to attend Mass due to work or sick kids or another serious reason then it is not a Mortal sin. If you choose to sleep in on Sunday then it is basically telling God that your sleep takes precedence over Him. I don’t think it is a Sabbath thing as much as it is a priority thing. We are called to love our God with all our hearts, all our souls and all our might; this is not accomplished if we can’t even spare an hour during the weekend.
This is a rough explanation of this subject, maybe someone else can do it more justice.🤷

As the deacon pointed out, you hurt God, but I would add that you are also hurting yourself by not going to Mass.

God gave the Church (though the apostles) the power to bind and loose on earth and in heaven.

The Church has set up a rule to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. This is meeting the Third Commandment and choosing not to attend Mass, as Newsy states, is choosing ourselves, our schedules, over God, a form of Idolatry, a sin against the First Commandment.

I can not see the argument that you are “too tired” as there are many times during the day that Mass is offered from Saturday evening to Sunday evening.

I suffer some side-effects from chemotherapy (also very fatigued at times as well) and am (many times) unable to make it to Mass in the morning but they subside or are taken care of by medication by the afternoon so I then attend a 4:30pm Mass.

When you put God first in your life you will find a way.

If you choose to miss mass, soley because you’re tired and don’t feel like going, what do you think it means???

How about if you choose to not spend time with your mom and dad, or your wife, on the only day of the week you have to visit them, do you really love them? Or do you really love yourself?

NO not in a word but, you need to make amends asking forgiveness the next chance you have with a priest in sacramental Confession and continue to keep the Day of the Lord Holy by honoring respect to God (“Jesus”). Going to Mass too is a benefit to your own soul as well.
 
Not attending mass due to weariness is sort of a reverse “Catch-22:” You are too tired, so you don’t go, but by going despite your weariness, you would be blessed and strengthened in all the most important ways. I hope and pray that, through attending mass and by participating in the Holy Eucharist, you might find your physical and spiritual stamina strengthened. Please ask God for enlightenment on the ways in which the Holy Eucharist impacts you personally and God’s church across all times and places.
I suggest that you add to your prayers a petition for those people who are plagued with physical and emotional afflictions yet who consider the opportunity to engage with our Lord through His Holy Eucharist to be the highest privilege God gives us here on Earth.
If all else fails, please consider the spirit of obedience required of us as God-loving people and particularly as Catholics.

Funny, and similar to what I thought; however, I think the real issue is for the OP to truly appreciate what Mass is all about. When we understand and believe, our priorities align themselves and we do all we can to get to Mass because that’s what we want to do more than anything else on a Sunday morning…and we search for the opportunity to get to Mass on every other day of the week.

As for whether I love god or love sleep more…you could say that about ANY sin!

so people who fornicate love Sex more than God.
