Is mixed marriage invalid?

Hello!
I am new to these forums and was wondering if I may ask a question regarding mixed marriage and validity in the Catholic Church. Please forgive me if this has been answered before.

I have been happily married for almost 16 years to an awesome man and we have 3 beautiful boys. When we were married, I was a Presbyterian, was baptized as a baby, active in my church and faith and was a closet Catholic! Meaning, I embraced all things Catholic, although I only took communion in my own church, but always believed in my heart it was THE true body and blood of Christ! 🙂

We were married in my church by a minister AND a priest. Although we did not have a mass. We did go through Pre-Cana, I did consent to our children being raised Catholic, which they are! 🙂
Then, in 1994, one year before our first son was born, I converted to Catholicism and have been a Catholic ever since.

My question is this:
Is our marriage valid in the Catholic Church? Does it exist in the eyes of God? Forgive me please, as I do not remember if we were given special dispensation by the Bishop then to do so, but our marriage was wholeheartedly blessed by my husband’s priest. Does the fact that I did not confess my sins before our wedding, make our marriage now invalid?

Sorry for the lengthy post. I am somewhat concerned over this and do plan to speak with our parish Priest as well. Thanks so much! God Bless you all!

The determining factor is if your husband was granted the proper dispensations. Since his priest was present, I would assume he was. You can call up the church he was going to at the time and ask them to check their records. It will probably take them a few weeks, but they can assure you that everything is in order. If it isn’t, all you need to do is have a simple ceremony in the church.

It doesn’t sound like you have anything to worry about.

You said “married by both your minister and a priest”.

I’m assuming that one married you, and then the other blessed your marriage, right?

If so, then your marriage should be valid in the Church, because then either you were married in the Church, then had your marriage blessed in the Presbyterian Church, or the other way around.

If not, then definitely go to your priest. I know you plan on it anyway, but he could give you a better answer than a bunch of strangers on an Internet forum. 👍 We don’t know all the details.

If if turns out that your marriage isn’t valid, then it shouldn’t be too much of a problem to fix that. Simple as going through the marriage, making sure there aren’t any obvious issues with it, and basically getting your vows renewed, if I’m not mistaken(which does happen quite frequently).

I would assume that your husbands priest obtained the necessary permissions. You however can check by having your husband request a record of his Sacraments be sent to his current parish or to him directly, from the parish he was Baptized in. (Some will not do this any longer because of falsification of documents) His Sacramental record will show the Marriage if it was recorded as valid.
