I know this sounds funny, but bear with me…
Wouldn’t it be next-to impossible for a Mormon living in Utah County to convert to a different religion (without moving away)?
Since moving here a little over a year ago, folks have been very upfront about the difficulty and challenges a non-Mormon has in living in this culture. I really haven’t had much of an issue, other than getting used to seeing Dear Elder and LDS movie billboards, but I understand what they are saying and I have appreciated the candor. The culture is so local and focused around the ward that we sort of stick out like a sore thumb in our neighborhood (we have very friendly neighbors and have had no problems). This could be very intimidating, but it isn’t for my wife and I.
Anyway, I think to myself… “self,” I says, “if I were LDS and decided to leave the church for Catholicism,” (or another) “how would that all play out?” And I think that it would be very difficult indeed.
I thought about this because of our Church of Christ friend who is 15 and living at home and wanting to leave for Catholicism. I think living in Utah County and leaving for another church would be even more difficult… now you see your neighbors everyday, but they know you’ve made a decision to reject their church… Whoa!
Anyone who can make that move has my full admiration!
