Is Mormonism Christian ?

Ah…

How to put this in the simplest terms; we do not believe in creation ex hihilo.

That’s what you would call a heresy in and of itself, but if you look at the rest of our doctrine in that light, it might make more internal sense.
I think what you’re saying is that everything is Eternal, including our “intelligence”, and including all “matter”. And I understand, this is LDS doctrine.

It is easy for a Catholic to answer the questions I asked. The answers would be:

God: Creator

Jesus Christ: Creator

Man: Creature (created)

Our deacon and RCIA instructor taught us that ‘God created man because God couldn’t create other God’s’.

Now wait a minute… Think this through:

What are the attributes of God? Right off the bat, we say:

God is Eternal.

Now, if God is Eternal, then it makes absolute sense that God can’t create other God’s. Because as soon as something/someone is created, it is not God, because, God is Eternal.

We believe we are creatures, not Creator. You mentioned that if we are to look at all of the doctrines of Mormonism in light of the fact that you don’t believe in creaton ex nihilo, it might make more internal sense. (?) To me, it really doesn’t. It just means your theology is different and thats all.

I do have another question. Do you not believe Jesus Christ was created? His spirit, I mean?

Jack Chick is afraid of Catholicism, which is to be afraid of the truth.

Likewise, John Smith was wrong about Catholicism.

For you to attempt to denigrate Catholicism is absolutely wrong. Just seek the the truth about God. This will naturally lead one to Catholicism.
He wasn’t denigrating Catholicism. he was pointing out that Chick’s site was as accurate about Catholicism as “letusreason” is about Mormonism, which is…not even a little bit.

It’s called sarcasm, or irony if you want to be gentle about it.

I’m not familiar with “letusreason”. I find lds.org to be a perfectly adequate resource to demonstrate how incoherent and self-refuting Mormon theology is. :coffeeread:

I understood the attempt, failed as it was. It’s not irony, and it’s in very poor taste. The two sites are in no way comparable, so it’s not true. A few posts later, you condoned it, saying it was “ACCURATE… but not nice.” While neither the web site, nor the comparison were accurate depictions, I agree with you that it was not nice. It certainly lacked knowledge and was not charitable.

Yes and if you want to know about Catholicism go here:

Both those sites are equally accurate.
Here are some that are good reading for you, and Catholics to make sure they are aware of the Mormon falsehoods and deceit:

You are descending into the maelstrom of epistemological confusion in order to avoid an unpleasant ontological truth. Mormon theology is rampant with logical contradictions.

Further, how you can take this:

and get this:

Is truly a mystery. :hypno:
The point is, the logic works. The premises don’t.

What’s a potential thing? As opposed to an actual thing? You can’t argue with the logic, but the words don’t mean anything. Things don’t just pop in and out of existence like they’re potential one second and actual the next.

Iron ore is transformed into the kitchen sink. It didn’t just pop into existence from a design.

If there is any constant in the universe, it is change, not stasis.

The only reason we think unchanging things are “perfect” is because of the Greek language where “perfect” means “complete”

Heraclitus was a great philosopher but a poor communicator. If he had carried the day instead of Aristotle, the whole world would be different. If Aquinas had studied Heraclitus instead of Plato and Aristotle, Christianity might have stayed like Mormonism. It is fun to speculate.

Anyway, there is no point in trying to convince you or even talk. You are too locked into your pov. Nothing wrong with that-- you have constructed your reality and it works for you. I wish you well, you are obviously a smart person.

Could it be that the questions themselves are ambiguous?
The questions were not ambiguous. Mormons can try to dress up their faith to make it seem somehow normal, but can’t really take it out in public for fear of the bizarre beliefs being in view.

Actually…most Mormons would have answered “yes” AND “no” to almost all of those questions.😉

,and they wouldn’t be one bit disingenuous or dodgy in doing so, either!
Exactly. And Bart as an exmo and a pretty fair human being knows this I think. So why did you ask Bart?

It would be demonstrating the bizarre nature of the Mormon faith system. There are correct answers to these questions in relation to God. They do not include both yes and no to any answer.

I didn’t know that Catholics thought that God was created.

We don’t. He is eternal. Remember Jesus saying “I AM”? He is the self-existent one. Spirits are eternal
Spirits are eternal”? I thought God (even according to mormonism) created our spirits?

No one is denigrating Catholicism. An anti-mormon site was posted as an authoritative source on Mormonism, and I simply replied with an anti-catholic site as being “equally accurate”, which it was. In other words, neither site was accurate.

That was my intention. I am afraid my sarcasm was not understood. I apologize if I offended anyone. Jack Chick is a known rabid anti-catholic who’s arguments are reprehensible.

I did not mean to denigrate the Catholic church. That was not my intent at all.

You answered your own question in the first paragraph. Why would you ask? God is not created. Jesus Christ is God. You figure it out.

mfbukowski,

Don’t you as a LDS believe God created Jesus’ spirit?

As in, "He is “our elder spirit-brother”?

By the way, Catholics do not believe ‘God was created’. But you already know this. 👍
