Is Mormonism pro-life or pro-choice?

I suppose that if they really believe that it’s right, then by all means do it. But I refuse to believe that the Holy Ghost will tell them that. The Holy Ghost will never witness to anyone something contrary to God and his will.

The following is being dictated to me by an LDs member–'The LDS church allows everyone to think for themselves, but there is a doctrine in all churches, not unlike the constitution of the United States, whereby it’s citizens have freedom of choice but still have laws to follow. It’s a misguided individual who believes that their ability to make intellectual choices can usurp the laws of God. To the faithful LDS all life is sacred. The concept of pro-choice does not even exist. When God said “Thou shalt not kill” the word “unless” was not at the end of the sentence. Anyone who attempts to justify their taking a pro-choice position is whistling through the swamp and is not a true member of the church.

How does an LDS distinguish between what the Holy Ghost is telling them and between their own feelings and beliefs?

3 Kings 22 21 And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, and said: I will deceive him. And the Lord said to him: By what means? 22 And he said: I will go forth, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the Lord said: Thou shalt deceive him, and shalt prevail: a go forth, and do so.

I know that you will probably not except this as scripture, but I do. In our Doctrine and Covenants in section 9 verses 8 and 9 it says:

“8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it be right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.
9 But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me.”

This burning in your heart describe here is also used by the original 12 apostles in Luke 24: 32. “And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us. while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?” They too felt the testimony of the Holy Ghost and how it causes us to have a burning in your heart when then knew something was right. I too have felt this. I know that the Lord will answer our prayers if we but ask of him.

Are you saying that the Holy Spirit will not testify to people? That it is a lying spirit? Yes I agree that there is Satan and his devils that try to trick people, but the true spirit has a whole different feel to it. It burns of truth. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of the testimony of the Spirit many times. One prominent one that I’m sure you know is when he talked to Peter and said ," Blessed art thou Simon Bar-jona; for flesh and blood have not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in Heaven."

You want to argue with me. This is silly. I’m not trying to argue doctrine. I was just answering the original question of how do the LDS determine what is the spirit and what is our own feelings. If you don’t like the answer… ignore it.

Your prophet provides exceptions for abortion. This is not a pro-life stance.
The rest of my comments explain how I got to that conclusion. The church tells you to pray about if you should make the exceptions. Concluding that abortion is wrong and I’m sure the Lord thinks so too, their prayers would be answered that it is wrong, thus it is Pro_life, even if it doesn’t force the ideas onto others.

Yes, I read what you wrote. You said that mormons use what prophets have said to help guide them to the right answer. Your prophet says that abortion is ok, in certain circumstances. And like I said already, this is not a pro-life stance. Your beliefs leave room for someone to believe that God gave permission for an abortion. Perhaps personally, you believe that you would not be guided to this decision, but you do not speak for all mormons and believe that all mormons can get an different answer from God than you

I’m sorry, but that was rude and uncalled for. I answered a question to the best of my ability. If you don’t like the answer, don’t listen. You don’t need to insult me. All I was saying is that is how we are taught in my church, which I believe was the original question.
Dosdog always gets right to the point. 🙂

But, you come here, telling people that they do not have the whole truth. While making condescending remarks about how that’s ok, you’ll still let Catholics be Christian. I don’t know why you would think that people would not reply in kind.

NO! I have done no such thing. I come here to explain some of our church’s doctrine that I have seen misinterpreted. I have never once said, “I think you don’t have the truth.” I have tried to be passive and explain it as in the LDS church says this, and this is why. I don’t try to preach to you. I don’t try to get you to believe our “cult.” I have never said anything of the sort. All I have done is say you said this, this is what is really going on. About the Catholics being Christian thing. I never meant to be condescending. It was merely to point out that people are assuming that they know what mormons believe. I will never tell you that I know all the Catholic doctrines. I can say, “I have a Catholic friend who said this. Can you explain it?” But I will never try to explain your doctrines. I have people here attacking what I say, because they think they know my church better. This is a very immature and not open attitude. This is not what I was trying to get. I was trying to just politely put the LDS point of view here, so that maybe someone will open their hearts to accept us instead of condemn us for things they don’t understand. So no, I do not expect responses like this. And that comment was not to the point. It was mockery.

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone for their (name removed by moderator)ut. I wanted to clarify that my intention of starting this thread was not to demean anyone or any denomination, but simply to ask a question and seek some information. I’m really sorry if feelings got bruised in the process. Could we please remain civil to each other, and show some of that esteemed Christian charity towards each other? Otherwise, I’m afraid the mods may start swinging their big bats.

Anyway, it’s Friday!

When I was a Mormon, I was never sure if the LDS Church believed that life began at conception. That may be one of the reasons they permit abortion in some cases. The LDS Church has not taken a position on embryonic stem cell research. When does life begin for the LDS? If they really believed life began at conception would they even consider allowing the murder of a baby in the womb because of rape or incest?

That was exactly my point! So why does the LDS leadership encourage its members to pray to see if the Holy Ghost will tell them it’s all right to kill their babies?

Paul

Your approach is passive aggressive. This is what you said:

"We acknowledge the existence of other Christian religion. (Yes I said that we mormons are Christian for if you listen to any mormon’s testimony, they will tell you that they believe (or know as the case may be) that Jesus is our savior and that his atonement can save us and that everything we have is a testimony of the truthfulness of Christ’s ministry.) We do not say that because you are Catholic, you are not Christian. We say that you are Christian although you do not have the true restored gospel. You do not have all the truth."

If that isn’t a statement of “I think you don’t have the truth.”, then what is?
