Hello.
Throughout my whole life one of the main problems has been my relationship with my mother. My father left when I was 3 and I have never met him. I appreciate what my mom has done for me, but that being said, we have not had a great relationship. We have fought for the last 15+ years, I’m now 24 and am trying to not fight with her but we don’t see eye to eye on much, and we generally just don’t get along well.
I am back in the Church after years of living in sin, and was excited to go to Confession yesterday in preparation for Holy week. I called my mom this morning to say hi and see how she was, but ended up just in a huge argument about ‘my lack of having a job’ etc. which I understand is a problem, but want to deal with it myself. I’m at the point in my life where I’m just tired of other people, even if it is my mom, telling me what to do. I have to figure out things for myself. Anyway…we got angry with eachother and raised our voices…I didn’t want to continue this so I just said “Ok i’m hanging up now…I’ll talk to you later”…I feel bad about not honoring my mother, but its just so hard to get along with her. Also, I’m an adult now, and I feel its important to express my feelings. But I’m afraid that I may have committed a mortal sin by yelling at her…which is SO frustrating because I’m scrupulous as is…and now I’m afraid I will not be able to receive communion throughout all of Holy week. I said a true act of contrition, and I think I will take communion this week and at Easter, because I need to get rid of my scrupulosity- it prevents me from participating in such important sacraments like the Eucharist.
But my main question is this…getting along with parents can be so tough, especially when it’s two adults who don’t agree on much. How can I tell if my disrespect to her is venial or mortal? I know the conditions of mortal sin, but it just seems like such a gray area in my situation… I never know what type of sin I committ, then freak out about possibly making a sacrilege after receiving the Eucharist…please help any way you can thanks
