Is my daughter's baptism valid?

My dearest of husbands (who is much cleverer than I!? ), rummaged through a lot of earlier VHS tapes we have, remembering that of course we videoed our daughter’s baptism and lo and behold, those wonderful words came out ‘I baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit’, loud and clear!
Please forgive me for all my rantings and ravings, but I do so need to understand CLEARLY, some of the legalisms of the Church if I call myself a Catholic. What conclusion I have come to? - one of the responses was quite clear: Form, Matter and Intent have all to be present to make it a valid sacrament in the eyes of the Church. This seems pretty clear cut to me …except when I noticed another thread on the subject of valid confessions…I quickly shut it off…and on the eucharist… I’ll leave this to the ones who do get it more clearly than me! Thanks everyone, appreciated your efforts. Clearly though, it is unfinished for many others.

I am happy to hear the good news. Not it is time to relax a little bit and then back to studying the Catechism and Canon Law. Now that you have experienced first hand what issues can arise when people are not fully aware of the Church’s requirement, you can see that probably you have been called to become an orthodox catechist.

I would hardly call the priest’s decision to invalidate a Sacrament because of his own politically correct ideals a mistake…this was deliberate action on the part of the priest.

It has come to pass recently that a parish we once belonged to has come under scrutiny by both the local bishop and The Vatican for some of it’s unorthodox practices. One of these is that any baptisms prior to a certain date were being regarded as invalid due to the priest using the words :‘I baptise you in the name of the Creator, Liberator and Sustainer’ instead of ‘in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit’. This particular practice has now ceased but many previous baptisms are now being questioned. Our daughter was baptised there over ten years ago and anyone concerned have been asked to contact the church about this matter. Before I do this, if I do, I thought it might be pertinent to discuss this online, as my thoughts are inconclusive about this. Any factual information or personal comments are welcome. can’t speak to your specific situation, but yes any baptism done with this formula is invalid, no sacrament occured and the individual must be baptized (not rebaptized, there was no baptism). Since your bishop has spoken and you have been contacted there really is no choice. When you reply to their inquiry state the facts and they will be able to determine what you have to do.

INSANITY! Priests don’t baptise in names other than the one’s we are given to do so in. I suggest you get yourself out of that denomination and try again.

I’m really glad to hear that your daughter had a valid Baptism after all. I was really worried for her! Thank God that the Baptism was videoed! Now, if anyone has any questions, you can just show them the video.

If you’re still monitoring this post, please consider offering a copy of that tape to the bishop. I’m sure that he would appreciate it.

in general I am not in favor of videotaping sacraments, but this just might change my mind, good for you in checking this out, hope the bishop gets a copy.
