Is my grandfather in hell?

My grandfather died recently at the age of 93. He was fully aware of the existence of the Catholic Church but was an atheist from his youth. Does that mean he must be in hell?

No. Knowledge of the existence of an institution does not mean that a person has received the grace to understand its truth or a personal obligation to join it. Rather than worry that your grandfather is in hell, I encourage you to pray for the repose of his soul and arrange for Masses to be said for him.
