Is my position on this acceptable for a Roman Catholic?

I firmly believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. However, I do not believe it is the right of any religions group (whether it be Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, etc.) to enforce their beliefs via laws/legislation. I think that same-sex marriage should be legalized at the civil levels, but it should never be accepted by the Roman Catholic Church.

Can I hold this belief?

For me, accepting something at a civil level must still be accepted by my Church otherwise I am putting a stamp of approval on something that I should not approve.

No, because 2 homosexuals are not marrying, but carrying on fornication and that is against God’s commandments. Marriage is between 1 man and 1 woman.

That marriage takes place between a man and a woman is not a legalism; it is a law of nature. Only a male and a female can become a family together in which all are related together by DNA. Marriage is the vow that is taken that the mother and father will remain together to take care of the children. In this way, our culture and society continues on into the next generation - it’s not just about having kids; it’s about raising them in a safe environment. Children need one parent of each sex to be role models for them on how to relate to people of either sex in the world. The added bond of being related by DNA to your children increases the instinct to protect them and take good care of them.

I think we need to conform society to what is good for its future. Same-sex “marriage” creates a society that has no future.

I’m for same-sex civil unions, because IMO marriages are only for the churches, but only at the state level. The churches should only enforce their stance where it’s applicable.

Let’s say the Philippines, a staunchly Roman Catholic nation, voted to legalize same-sex marriage. In that case, the bishops of the country could enforce their belief that it’s wrong, because of the sheer influence of the Church in that nation.

As Catholics we are to render to Ceasar what is his and to God what is His. With that said and done, we still need to evangelise. How can a Catholic agree to something that is just bad for society? We also pray for the nations. We pray that nations see Gods way, not that God will take care of them when they continue to sin.

God’s law is applicable EVERYWHERE. You cannot support homosexual unions of any kind and consider yourself a faithful Catholic. You’re in dissent about this issue.

In my opinion they will not be satisfied until the can be married in a Catholic church by a Catholic priest.

Never. Never. Never.

The church and state are miles away from each other, as it should be, but never would anyone allow it to happen in a Catholic church. I don’t even think it should happen in a Protestant church, where some of it’s allowed. If it’s a house of God, take that away from it.

The issue is more than just our BELIEF, it is also an problem for society. That is why you will hear Catholics giving more secular arguments rather than bible thumping. While we do support biblical marriage, there are secular reasons to do so.

Can I be very frank and secular about this…
Same-sex ‘Marriage’ is impossible anyway… even in civil law, for a Marriage to be valid, one has to consummate the marriage through sexual intercourse.

Homosexuals can’t have sexual intercourse, only sodomy.

And technically, in the eyes of Holy Mother Church [and thus God] at least, using Contraception for in the consummation would not actually provide a valid marriage.

For a Catholic who truly believes the infallible teachings of the Catholic Church, this is not a question of “forcing your beliefs” onto somebody, it’s a matter of helping others avoid a serious mistake that will cause them great pain and suffering (both in this life and the next). It’s also a matter of displeasing our Blessed Lord by endorsing activities that violate natural law (of which, He is the author).

“Not forcing my beliefs on someone” is actually a very selfish stance for a Catholic to take and is inconsistent both with love for our God and for our neighbour.

No, for two reasons
  1. it is against God’s law
  2. legalizing same sex marriage on a civil level jeopardizes people’s salvation. We need to guide people to Truth and keep everything false away from people to help ensure the salvation for the most people possible.

No because, in addition to what’s been said, this is not a matter of refraining from making something immoral illegal, but using the law to create something that is bad.

No, your position would not be acceptable. Same sex marriage is a sin against natural law and is wrong in every circumstance. To favor SSM in civil venues would mean being out of communion with the Catholic Church.

Marriage is between one man and one woman for the in lifelong union for the purpose of bringing forth new life. No other union is able to fulfill this important and beautiful task.

I do not believe that the use of contraception as such invalidates a marriage. There may be an issue regarding a hidden intention to never have children, but if a couple practices contraception for a period of time after marriage and has children later, the marriage doesn’t suddenly become valid on the day the wife (for example) goes off the pill.

I suggest that you spend quite a bit of time studying the teachings of the catholic Church with regard to the human dignity of each person, the role or purpose of sexuality in every human person. Study the creation of human persons, both male and female, and the role in society of the family. Also take a look at the portion of the CCC on the sixth commandment. The Catholic church holds the true and valuable teachings of God, instructing us for our salvation as creatures created in the image and likeness of God for eternal life. Human sexuality has a valuable and dignified purpose. Misusing our own bodies in disordered sexual practices is a tragedy and a travesty.

No. It is not permissible to hold that same-sex marriage (or marriage substitutes like civil unions) should be legal. The Church-State seperationist ideology on which that line of thinking is based is heretical.

I thought of this thread when I saw this:

Florist sued again for refusing to provide flowers for gay wedding

There are other consequences to accepting same sex marriage as something that is natural and legal. People that use the argument that it doesn’t affect other people are incorrect, it does. (BTW, I don’t know much about the web site with the news on it, but I have read other articles with similar situations, or other situations in which the ramifications of accepting same sex marriage can be seen.)
