Is my vasectomy a mortal sin?

I went through a sterilization procedure after the birth of our second child. My wife and I decided we were not going to have any more children. When I received the procedure I was not aware that sterilization was a sin. Given that our marriage has been consummated with children, is the vasectomy still considered a mortal sin for which I need to be absolved?

Hi Sean,

No, it was not a mortal sin for you because you did not know that it is. So you do not have to confess it.
