If a women had her ovaries removed (for ovarian cancer or chronic condition), what is the church’s position on taking birth control pills for hormone regulation? Does NAPFRO also result in hormone regulation or is it only the attempt to come up with natural ways to conceive? If you can’t conceive, does the church still have issues with the pill if the intent of taking the pill is not to eliminate the risk of pregnancy?

Thanks

Talk to your doctor. We can’t give medical advice per forum policy.

I edited my response to merely limit it to the church’s stance, rather than making a medical decision.

If a woman has no ovaries, then obviously taking hormones cannot be for birth control, as you point out. Contraception is not a thing, it’s a behavior. Hormone pills are objects. They are morally neutral. They are neither good nor evil. It’s what’s done with them that has moral weight. So if a woman is physically in capable of conceiving, she by definition cannot contracept, and thus cannot be doing anything wrong by taking them. Even a woman who is not physically infertile to the degree you say could still quite licitly take hormone pills for a legitimate medical purpose, even if they rendered her unable to conceive.

Thanks for the clarification :). That was very helpful.
By NAPFRO, do you mean NaPro?
Yes. I don’t know about this that much. It would definitely be interesting to know the risks and benefits of NaPro.

If both ovaries are removed, NaPro (or any other method of charting cycles) is impossible, since the menstrual cycle doesn’t occur anymore.

The use of hormones (marketed as oral contraceptives/birth control pills) to treat a medical condition is not forbidden even if a woman has ovaries…regardless of what you may have heard or even read on this forum from other members.

Per their website, NaPro can be used for treatment of GYN issues unrelated to fertility or childbearing concerns: https://www.naprotechnology.com/
Thanks so much for the references / resources. Have a great evening!!!
