Back in the Stone Age, was this not known as the feast of the Circumcision?Yes, it is… but to be more precise… the Feast of Mary, Mother of God… which always falls on New Year’s Day… is the holy day of obligation. Not technically, “New Years Day”.
Just didn’t want anyone to be confused.![]()
Yes, it was. Still is in the Eastern Rites. But the feast of Mary, Mother of God (the oldest Marian feast that has moved around through the centuries) was placed there in 1974.Back in the Stone Age, was this not known as the feast of the Circumcision?
Yep. And the Gospel reading still echoes this.Back in the Stone Age, was this not known as the feast of the Circumcision?
In 1960 Blessed John XXIII changed the name of the feast from the Circumcision to the Octave Day of the Nativity. This is what Catholics using the 1962 missal, the EF, call this day in their missals. The 1970 missal and kalendar changed the name yet again to the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, while still recognizing the date as the octave day of Christmas. The collects were modified in this reform to amplify the Marian nature of the feast, which was most anciently the feast on this day, centuries before it became the Circumcision or the Octave Day of the Nativity.Back in the Stone Age, was this not known as the feast of the Circumcision?
Probably, since it falls 8 days after Christmas. And it was the Law for male infants to be circumcised on the 8th day of life.Back in the Stone Age, was this not known as the feast of the Circumcision?
