I know that one is able to only receive the Body species (I don’t know how to say that) because It contains both the Body and the Blood of Christ in it.

But is one able to only receive the Precious Blood, for the same reasons? I have never seen it done, just wondering.

Yes, it is possible. And in the case of those with celiac disease it would be prudent. If a given parish does not routinely provide the Precious Blood to the faithful this would require ptior arrangements with the priest.

Yes, it is possible to receive only the Precious Blood. For example, say a priest needs to give last rites to a baby, in that case the priest would likely only give a small portion of the Sacred Blood of Jesus to the baby. Also, the body, blood, soul, and divinity are all entirely present in both species. 🙂

No, a baby would not be given communion as part of the last rites – unless he/she is an Eastern Rite Catholic. Canon Law is specific on that topic, a child can only receive Communion in this instance if he understands what he is receiving and can do so with the proper reverence.

Can. 913 §1. The administration of the Most Holy Eucharist to children requires that they have sufficient knowledge and careful preparation so that they understand the mystery of Christ according to their capacity and are able to receive the body of Christ with faith and devotion.
§2. The Most Holy Eucharist, however, can be administered to children in danger of death if they can distinguish the body of Christ from ordinary food and receive communion reverently.

Hi Hamburgler,

How are you?

Either species is the Body, Blood, Soul & Divinity of Jesus Christ.

I’m not sure if exceptions could be made for a baby in danger of death, but the Precious Blood can be given to those who have feeding tubes or cannot swallow, as well as allergic those with reactions.

yes, if both species are offered. for instance someone with celiac disease may have to do that, but usually they inform the priest ahead of time about this so provision can be made for them. The ordinary means of reception by the faithful is the host but in recent years at some times and places the chalice has been offered as well. Babies do not receive last rites, which include confession and communion. They are baptized, if necessary, in danger of death and may be confirmed if time allows. They may also receive anointing of the sick, but the part of “last rites” that includes forgiveness of actual sin is not necessary.

this thread is asking obviously about the Latin Rite so discussions of Eastern rite practice are mooted.

In a regular parish Mass if there is a reason you will be receiving under the form of wine only, it is best to let the priest know to save confusion

Yes, each species of the Blessed Sacrament possesses the fullness of the sacrament.

My mother does, being a sufferer of Celiac Disease.

Yes, this can be done. Our parish does not offer the Precious Blood due to traffic flow problems. But there is one lady who goes into the sanctuary at the same time as the EMHC’s and receives only the Precious Blood at that time. Seems to work. I noticed that when we had a visiting priest, she stepped into the sacristy before Mass - perhaps to let him know.

You could say the Eucharist in the form of bread, or under the species of bread, or under the accident of bread.

In receiving either the Precious Blood or the Body of Christ, you receive the totality of Jesus’ body, blood, soul and divinity.

Recently I had to fast in preparation for a medical procedure, so when I went to mass, I took a small sip of the Precious Blood and did not partake of the Body. I still received all of what Christ promised in the Eucharist (and I was so grateful that I could receive before I had my procedure).
