Although a person does not need Confession for forgiveness of venial sins, does he need to confess venial sins when he’s at Confession?

No. the only sins required to confess in confession are mortal sins. However, most may have doubt as to what is venial sin and what is mortal sin.

Therefore, if you have knowledge of a venial sin it is a good idea to confess it, most especially if it seems very embarrasing and it is sticking in your mind.

Do you have a source for this?

There are numerous sources in both Moral Theology and Sacramental Theology.

One does not need ot confess, buyt it is certainly recommended, as repetitive venial sin an one area can certainly lead to more serious sin.

Receiving communion removes them. But the tendency is still there. The more you confess them the less you do them. I always use an illustration of a kleenex and punch holes in it for every lie, for basically every venial sin I can think of. Then I explain to them how venial sin weakens the soul and it makes it much easier for you to fall into mortal sin. Do you have to confess them no. Should you absolutely.
Do you think the Holy Father went to confession every day to remove mortal sin.

  1. *]The Holy Father went to confession three times a week – not daily.

*] The closer we are to the light of Christ, the more clearly we see the stains of sin upon our soul. The person getting dressed in a dark closer will not see the stains and wrinkles that would be seen in he got dressed in front of lights and a mirror. The further away from the light of Christ we are, the less clearly we see our faults and failing and therefore, less likely are we to confess them. The closer we come to the light of Christ, the more we see our own imperfections.

The Pope may very well have been confessing mortal sins. We do not know and it is not our place to decide. It is our place to follow his example, examining our conscious and ridding ourselves of anything that might cause division between us and our God.

CCC 1458 **Without being strictly necessary, confession of everyday faults (venial sins) is nevertheless strongly recommended by the Church.**59 Indeed the regular confession of our venial sins helps us form our conscience, fight against evil tendencies, let ourselves be healed by Christ and progress in the life of the Spirit. By receiving more frequently through this sacrament the gift of the Father’s mercy, we are spurred to be merciful as he is merciful:60

Why would you not want to confess venial sins? it makes life soooooooo much easier.

Yea… I went to Catholic grade school and Catholic high school.

Did you?

Ken
You may have taken my question the wrong way; I was in no way trying to degrade your statement. It’s just that I don’t depend my beliefs concerning religion on what people say on a message board without a source, would you?
I did not go to Catholic grade school and I’m not in a Catholic high school.

A person may have too many venial sins to confess and could possibly hold up a line much longer when it’s not strictly necessary.

Well, that person could make an appointment…

If you write them on a list and quickly say them without explanation for any of them this is not a difficult task. I always thought the same thing but never really understood the fact that the priest does not need to hear the explanation for everyone you spoke bad about, every time you broke the law etc.

Since I am a weekly penitent, I do indeed confess all venial sins. I need grace from the sacrament to combat them. I also confess whre my imperfections have held sway and ways I have failed in charity, etc.

To be serious about the spiritual life and the desire for the path of holiness, one will wish to confess the venial sins so that they do not grow and get the better of us. It is not easy to be docile to the will of God. I, unfortunately, am not. But I do hope to be one day. And I need SO much grace for this to happen.

Ave Maria!

Few things feel better than hearing the priest say: “Go in peace. All of your sins been forgiven.”

How true the hardest part is packing the bag, carrying it into the confessional, unloading it, then finally receiving the grace of the Sacrament. Absolution is the greatest peace one can have in life.:tiphat:

Well since I am a Catholic and you are too maybe you should depend your beliefs on what the Catholic Church teaches.

My suggestion to you would be to obtain the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Also you should have been taught about the Sacrament of Penance (Reconcilliation) in CCD class, hopefully properly by your instructor.

Since I was confirmed Byzantine I was taken out of CCD class right after my first Communion.

I didn’t no they had a line for confession anymore. Alright, bad joke, but still, my point is that one should spend as much time as they need in confession. This is one time where wating in line should be the least of ones concerns.
