Is Onward Christian Soldiers a Catholic hymn or Protestant

I love it, and would happily sing it any time. 😃

AFAIK it is little known in the Catholic Church, and sounds “old fashioned” to contemporary Catholic ears, so I wouldn’t recommend it in general, unless you think the particular congregation would be receptive to it.

No. Catholics may sing hymns penned by non-Catholics, so long as they don’t contain elements contrary to the faith. This is the old “Can we sing Amazing Grace” argument. 🙂
 
I LOVE this hymn!

I love singing it, and I love playing it even more! It sounds good with an organ, piano, or both together.

Love the “may sing” like there is a hymn swat team at the Vatican with black helocopters ready to swoop away renegade hymn heretics from small parish churches each Sunday!

Hang around here for a while, and you will find that the SWAT team is a small number of zealous laymen sitting in the back of church taking notes.

I fear them more than I fear the Vatican 🙂
 
I love the hymn! I live not to far from both a Air Force base and an Army base, I can see where Onward Christian Soldiers being used in sevices on those two bases. One church that went to, used Just As I Am at least every other Sunday as a Commionun hymn.

The hymn is perfectly fine to sing, and it’s just so beautiful how COULDN’T you sing it if you had the chance!
 
If I’m not mistaken, this is one of the two hymns that they would always be singing in the church in Little House on the Prairie. The other was “Bringing in the Sheaves” lol. 🙂
