People are drawn, through human nature, to teachings that fit their lifestyles. We should be seeking God and willing to change our lifestyles. Once saved always saved has an appeal to people who desire their lifestyles more than God. In order to think of themselves as already good and want to avoid changes in their lifestyles, OSAS appealed to them.
I disagree. I know a few people who do believe OSAS, some are in my own family. They are not less obedient to God, In fact, I think they are often MORE obedient. It promotes a view of God that He is more sovereign, more in control of them. It leaves God in so complete a control that they have no real choices. It takes a lot of faith to believe that.
OSAS is usually coupled with a belief in total Depravity (Humans cant do anything on their own, choices are not theirs to make) and Unconditional Election (God chose who is saved, not them), Irresistible Grace (You cant prevent God from doing His will). It doesn’t make them want to do whatever they want, it makes them want to show they really were chosen by God by showing the Fruit of the Spirit in their lives. Cause if they don’t then they probably aren’t
really saved! No one wants to think that they are not one of God’s Chosen people.
I think the reason it’s not more popular is that people have a hard time digesting the idea that they were made in the image of God, yet are not capable of choosing anything… even their own religion. I know I can’t accept it because I can’t accept the idea that God might not have “chosen” me and no matter how badly I want to be His child, no matter how much I repent, call out to Him, obey Him, Love Him, that it could all be in vain cause Unconditional Election is UNCONDITIONAL… If it is true, then I can’t see how that is LOVE. They tell me “But God is sovereign, and if He didn’t choose you, you should be happy you were allowed to live and worship Him at all.” I can’t buy that. If they are right, I’d rather be delusional my whole life and believe that God cares about my fate. I even had a friend who believes OSAS try to commit suicide cause they concluded that God hadn’t chosen them, after all sin still happened with God in total control! That isn’t the mark of people who say a prayer and then don’t care if they sin. It’s a mark of people desperate for God in their lives.
