I got invited to a friend’s house with some other people (all Catholic that I know of) tonight to play an “Airsoft” war. Airsoft is running around shooting people with plastic pellets. Now, I’ve heard that boxing is immoral, so would this be, seeing as you are causing people pain?

Is your goal to hurt someone or just to play a game? I don’t see how what you describe is any more immoral than a game of paintball, although I’ve never heard of airsoft.

It’s basically paintball.

So as long as my intent is not to hurt someone it’s fine?

If you intended to hurt people then I’m sure you could think of more effective means than airsoft.

No it is not immoral.

Neither is boxing.

Seriously? People are freaking out about childrens games now as to whether their immoral? Boxing too? Give me a break, some Catholics have jumped from common sense.

Airsoft is no more immoral than nerf guns, as long as you have the pain tolerance. If you are to take a friend, tie him to a tree, and shoot him multiple times in the head, maybe thats immoral, but airsoft is not.

I don’t think there is anything immoral even if you want to cause pain though, as long as your intent is not to hurt a helpless or non consenting individual. There are obviously safety concerns and being smart. If you think you are going to get so out of control where you may hurt someone intentionally or recklessly, then ya, don’t play. Although I personally would not play boxing because of the greater chance of a head injury compared with other sports, I don’t think there is anything immoral with it and it can be an enjoyable sport to watch. But beside the head, I’m all for contact sports.

And come on, causing bruises or smacking consenting people around in sports for fun is in no way sinful. In fact, the bruises and battle wounds you get are generally something to be proud of. Again, just don’t be stupid–bruises and the like are fine–breaking bones and causing injuries requiring hospitalization–obviously not ok if done intentionally. Why is this topic even up for debate?
