On Catholic Parents OnLine and Women of Grace they think that it has occultistic characteristics… like nearly all game-based/ fighter pet series (doesn’t know plural form).
Like, elements of nature which can be a Pythagorean principle (according to my chemistry book) or an element of Eastern spiritualism (they are made in Japan).
Since I think that they didn’t hear about the theory of Pythagoras, it’s taken from Eastern spiritualism, and in China, there is five basic elements instead of the Pythagorean four (there are extra classes).
Mentioning of fictional deities linked to the monsters are another problem… like “Mew”, “deity cards” in YGO and “the elders” in Bakugan… not to mention the dualistic cores in it.
And summoning monsters with cards? Many would think that it’ll lead to real-life summoning.
Plus, attributing an “essence” to an inanimate object is an animist principle.
Pretty much every Disney movie and every cartoon I ever watched as a kid had occultisitic characteristics and animist principles in them. Heck, a couple Bugs Bunny cartoons had both. Hasn’t affected me at all. Partly due to my understanding that it was all make believe and partly because my parents did their job in ensuring I knew what was make believe and what was real.

i agree totally with what you are saying…about disney/buggs bunny, pokemon…ect

but as soon as you said its all make believe, alarm bells started to ring…it must be the catholic in me.lolol…

the biggest trick the devil plays,is to conn people into he doesnt exist… there are elements of bad work not evil in the examples of poke/buggs/disney,i think but if people cannot see that its for entertainment then IMHO they are the ones who need treating not others …

BTW… is watching a program on people falling off bikes/chairs/skateboards etc…

walking into walls/falling into T V sets… evil? because some people could perceive it as laughing at other peoples misery/mistakes…

honestly its like cromwell all over again…LETS BAN CHRISTMAS…

I’ve never heard anyone associate pokemon with the occult before. In 2000ish, JP2 said something along the lines of the game being okay because it was creative and encouraged friendship.🙂 This should not come as a surprise, as every single pope has been a pokemon master.😉 Many people don’t know this, but after a man wins the papal election, he also has to win a series of pokemon battles before he is allowed to accept the office. He will face the Master of the Order of the Dominicans, the previous pope’s spiritual adviser, the Superior General of the Jesuits and the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. If the man elected happens to hold any of these positions, he will instead face the cardinal with the highest leveled starter. As most trainers get their first pokemon at around age ten and all of the cardinals and heads of religious orders are very old, these battles involve men who have be trainers for well over half a century. As a result, the battles are four hundred kinds of awesome!😃
It is a little known fact that St. Peter came to be the head of the church on earth by defeating James, John, Andrew and Philip using only his raticate.:yup:

Oh how I wish all of that were true.

Could you please post a link to this statement, if you have one? I did some searching and the best I can find is that it appears that, during JPII’s pontificate, a television network that had ties to the Italian Bishops Conference made a statement saying that Pokemon was not harmful. In the media, this instantly translated into a papal endorsement of the games (which is simply not the case):

enquirer.com/editions/2000/05/02/loc_vatican_broadcasters.html

If there actually was a papal statement that came directly from Pope JPII, then this would hold some moral weight. I wouldn’t consider the endorsement by this television network as being necessarly reflective of Catholic teaching, however.

I would just like to say that someone who make the ludicrous connection is not surprising. there are people who say the earth is flat and people who say His Holiness John Paul II was the antichrist. people will always project there paranoid fantasys unto innocent children’s entertainment. saying Pokemon is Wicca or satanist is like saying my little pony is Wicca or the Teletubbies are gay. Before they said Pokemon was occultist fundamentalists were saying the evolution of Pokemon defies god. Just because something is somewhat addictive does not mean it is bad. I am somewhat addicted to coffee does that mean coffee is bad? Sorry for the rant, but Pokemon was an integral part of my childhood. Harry Potter was too, but I’m on the fence as to whether or not Harry Potter defies god and promotes witchcraft, But remember we are catholic not evangelicals.

I find it curious that so many Catholics think that our faith is somehow lax and that the error with “fundamentalist christians” is that they are more orthodox and willing to separate themselves from the secular world then Catholics are. Keep in mind that the error of the evangelical faith lies in the protestant heresy, it has nothing to do with being devout or having a willingness to “judge” certain activities as being immoral. Catholics who believe this should spend time immersing themselves in the readings of the Saints and doctors of the Church:

St. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori:
‘How much did the saints do to secure their eternal salvation! How many nobles and kings have forsaken their kingdoms and estates, and shut themselves up in cloisters! How many young persons have forsaken their country and friends, and have dwelt in caves and deserts! And how many martyrs have laid down their lives under the most cruel tortures! And why? to save their souls. And what have we done?’
Brethren, says St. Paul, let the great business of your eternal salvation be the sole object of all your care.
It is the most important affair, because if the soul be lost, all is lost.
St. Louis Marie de Montfort:
The number of the elect is so small - so small - that were we to know how small it is, we should faint away with grief. The number of the elect is so small that were God to assemble them together, He would cry to them, as He did of old, by the mouth of His prophet, ‘Gather yourselves together, one by one’ - one from this province, one from that kingdom.
St. Augustine:
If you wish to imitate the multitude, then you shall not be among the few who shall enter in by the narrow gate.
We have to remember that the word “holy” comes from the meaning to “set apart” or “separate oneself”. It’s scary just how much consensus there is amoung Saints as to how few will actually make it to heaven. It, therefore, stands to reason that many “pleasures” that this world considers to be harmless can, in fact, be very dangerous to our eternal salvation.

I find many of the harsh comments towards those who are posing moral questions about Pokemon quite saddening. In fact, many of the responses and accusations that I see here condeming people for being “too religious” are exactly the same arguments that I would expect to see from a secular person responding to the condemnation of birth control or pre-marital sex (which is really quite sad to see on a Catholic forum). We ought to seek the Truth here with a positive disposition even if the topic of Pokemon being immoral seems rediculous (afterall, to many people in the world, Catholic doctrine such as the existence of Satan also seems laughable and rediculous).

Here’s how I see it.
If you don’t like Pokemon, try something else instead like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

If the various saints are right then there is no hope for the laity and no hope for the clergy. only a hundred in a billion maybe ever less than that will be saved. I just hope that they are wrong about that. through they probably aren’t. forums.catholic-questions.org/images/smilies/frown.gif

There’s always reason for great hope! 🙂

That said, we have to strive for perfection in this life. Who walks into an exam room and only plans to answer 80% of the questions? Strive for a 100% in your moral life (aim to be a Saint) and let God take care of the rest!

That does not eliminate the underlying logic that demonstrates why the assertions you made were questionable and they are not justified by red herring quotations (even if they are from saints).

If you wanna defend your position, stick to it. Otherwise, you are incapable of giving a logical defense of anything, much less the faith.

I dunno.🤷 I know the people in these said videos have the choice to put them up or not. I see not much harm if it was the dude’s choice to put it up 😃

That’s a new one on me. I thought Pokemon was a problem because it promoted evolution. 😉

For what it’s worth, the human are incapable of magic, period. The Pokemon, a completely natural occurrence in this game world, are the only ones with such abilities. Pokemon are not only used in these friendly battles, they’re also used as service animals, draft animals, and pets. No one really thinks too much about them because in this would they are just part of the scenery like a squirrel or a robin. The further you venture from home, the more exotic the animals become.

It’s not like you have some kind of super secret knowledge of some unnatural power that will get you ahead in this world. That’s the beauty of the whole thing…you’re not Superman. You’re just an ordinary kid at the very bottom if an already established totem pole. You move up it by completely natural means (by natural I mean this world’s standard of natural of course). By the end of the game you’re STILL not superman. You just worked harder than everyone else.

I often recommend it as a good game for people learning to read (though not always for grammar as it occasionally tips its hat to the era of bad Japanese to English translations as an in-joke). It’s very simple and intuitive but there is a looooot of text and a certain degree of literacy helps make the game more enjoyable.

I actually think it’s a better tool for teaching strategy. Then again, all RPGs are. Pokemon is somewhat unique being that it is the first of so-called ‘monster tamer’ games. A browse through Bulbapedia also gives one a glimpse of how deep gameplay can be in terms of creating a Pokemon team that is entirely your own! w

Very true. I didn’t think of that right away. When I worked in a video game store I got more parents asking me for a game to help promote reading than promote strategy. 🙂

You are indeed correct about that.

Strategy RPGs tend to have varying amounts of popularity per game.

Correction: the “four basic elements” theory wasn’t made by Phytagoras, it was made by Aristotle.

You still have not made your point. Four basic elemental tropes (Fire, Water, Earth, Air) are used in fantasy all the time. I use it all the time! No sign of any occult force here.

👍 amen to that. Not that I have anything against the Puritans though. I think they were pretty cool and they sure loved the bible. Almost everybody born during King James’s rule had a name from the old testament. Or maybe I just liked the Solomon Kane stories too much.

Allegedly, the anime uses the so-called “25th frame”. This was discovered by Russian psychiatrists, who then urged the government to pull the show from air.
FYI, the so-called “25th frame” is an alleged mind control method which involves subliminals. It is said that Russian TV channels manipulate Ukranian citizens into subservience with this method.
