Is Pontius Pilate's letter to Caesar legitimate?

How authentic is Pilate’s letter to Caesar? If it were true, it gives a lot of credence as proof of Jesus’ life on earth…

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia:

This composition is clearly apocryphal though unexpectedly brief and restrained… It is probable that the pseudographic letter was forged [in response to anti-Christian literature].
