I’d have to read more to see the context of what he’s driving at, but I don’t think he’s denying the Real Presence. The point of Eucharistic devotion is Adoration, not going to the Adoration Chapel to find God. Perhaps that is what he meant.

I think I’m glad I didn’t know he’d written this a long time ago, and I’m glad he’s said that some of his ideas have changed since he was younger (if I’m understanding it rightly, which I may not be doing anyway).

While I’m not familiar with this specific quote, from what I’ve read of Ratzinger’s other work, I think the implication is "…To go to church on the ground that one can visit God who is present only there is a senseless act which modern man rightfully rejects.”
