We need different things at different times. Francis probably wouldn’t have been the best bet for the political subtlety required during the 1940’s or during the Cold War, or for the turmoil and persecution of the first few centuries of the early Church, or to write with the scholarly nuance that some others have. But I think he’s doing a good job of doing what’s needed at this moment in time, even if it’s not always accomplished with as much polish and nuance as we’ve come to expect from his two immediate predecessors.
