Is Pope Francis the best Pope we ever had?

That’s an interesting perspective.

I think the “rock star Pope” phenomenon began with St. John Paul II, though there were some signs of it (such as Pope Paul VI addressing the United Nations) even earlier. Once that particular genie was out of the bottle, there was no putting it back it.

Benedict XVI, a more traditionally minded Pope, was clearly uncomfortable with this phenomenon: in his last book, I recall him saying that one of the reasons he abdicated was because he couldn’t take the “rock star lifestyle” (meaning the travel, glad-handing, etc.) any more, referring specifically to the upcoming World Youth Day.

As to his political views, I think (and I say this with utmost respect for the Pope) that they have been shaped by a rather provincial attitude, in which he sees most phenomena - even global ones - through the lens of Latin American politics and particularly the peculiar Argentine phenomenon known as Peronism, which cannot be easily classified as “right” or “left”. The Church and her Pontiffs have taken a variety of political positions over the years, and even successive Popes have had areas of disagreement (contrast Bl. Pius IX and Leo XIII, for example), and none of them is binding on the faithful unless they are authoritatively declared as such (for example, the 1949 decree of the Holy Office pronouncing automatic excommunication for officially belonging to the Communist Party).

Theologically, I think he personally finds the entire issue of doctrine rather tiresome and tends to delegate it to others (such as Kasper and Fernandez), who then, unfortunately, open the door to questionable ideas and practices. But, as St. Thomas Aquinas would point out, we are still obliged to obey him as Catholics unless he actually commands us to commit a sin.

Even he would probably say no, but I will leave that to God, I like him a lot and appreciate that he is as upfront as he is. I think he’s a lot better than a lot of his critics deserve…

If the Pope started boasting that he is the best, would that be a cause for concern?

The climate change comment is personal opinion, not Church stance.

I guess it’s much easier to judge those popes that have been in power during our own lifetimes. Being pope now, in 2017 is considerably different that being pope in 1922 because technology has made them players on the world’s stage for all to see and hear.

John Paul was the first and last pope I have ever had any interest in.

I guess for me that makes him the BEST 😊

To be honest, I’m not so sure that is the case. Because they (indeed all of us) have minutia of our lives recorded I think we can get a skewed vision of people by latching on to things that might not have been apparent or even worthy of comment in past generations. The shear amount of “stuff” we have about modern popes make it too easy to build our own vision of them simply because of the fact that we have to filter everything through our own biases.

“It is perfectly clear that a judgment of the Apostolic See, whose authority is unsurpassed, must not be retracted by anyone. Nor is it permissible for anyone to pass judgment on its rulings.” (Pope Nicholas, 9, 3, Sacrisancta Romana, Part I, Dis XXII, 95-96, Decertum Divi Gratiani)
“No one will judge the Apostolic See as it desires to be first in administering justice, for the judge will not be judged by an emperor nor by the entire clergy…nor by the people.” (Pope Innocent, Nemo judicabit, 2, 9, q. 3, 867, ibid.)
“The actions of the subjects are judged by us, but our actions are judged by the Lord.” (Pope Antherius, Facta subditorum, ibid.)
“The entire Church throughout the world knows that the most holy Roman Church has the right to judge all and that no one is permitted to question its judgment…”(Pope Galasius, Cuncta per mundum, ibid.)
“All decrees of the Apostolic See must be accepted as confirmed by the divine voice of Blessed Peter the Apostle.” (Pope Agatho, Sic omnes sanctiones, 1, 19, 77, ibid.)
“Certainly, since the holy Roman Church, whom Christ wanted us to preside over, has been set up for all as an image and model, whatever it decrees, what it ordains is to be observed perpetually and without opposition.” (Stephen V, Enimvero quia, 1, 19, 78, ibid.)
“To no one is granted the will or the possibility of transgressing the commandments of the Apostolic See…Therefore, let whoever want to act contrary to the decrees of the Apostolic See lie prostrate with sorrow over his own demise…For there is no doubt among anyone that he has already been condemned for his disobedience and presumption by his sacred synod and the Apostolic Church.” (Pope Gregory the Great, Nulli fas est, ibid.)
“By a general decree we…have determined to condemn as anathema and to declare such a person always guilty before God as a transgressor of the Catholic faith, whether he is a king or a bishop or a ruler, who in anyway believes or allows that the decrees of the Roman Pontiffs are to be violated by censure (the expression of formal disapproval).” (Pope Adrian, Generali decreto, 2, 25, q. 1, 1414, ibid.)

God, in His infinite mercy and wisdom sends us what we need.
Pope Francis, embodies what we need right now.

Pope John XXIII’s gift was renewal
Pope Paul VI gift was moving forward with stability
Pope JPI’s gift was to show us not to take the Church for granted.
Pope JPII’s gift was brotherhood…bringing diverse peoples together
Pope Benedict XVI’s gift is fidelity, and reconciliation
Pope Francis’ gift is mercy.

Each has his own task before him.

I have supported each Pope and will continue to do so, trusting the Holy Spirit as their guide.

… and as my wife says, I certainly trust that Pope Francis is a bit better at listening to the Holy Spirit than I am.

👌

I know right? Often what we believe is the Spirit speaking to us is of our own invention. God bless!

Popemon…I like it, in a weird sort of Catholic way!

He is our Pope, and that is all I need to see.

I have only been a Catholic for the last three, but I think of them as faith, hope and charity, except I put them in this order.

Hope - St. John “Be Not Afraid” Paul the Great
Faith - Pope Emeritus Benedict
Love - Pope Francis

It is impossible for me to pick a favorite. I have been wowed by all.

We could talk about opinions. 🙂

We could talk about popes. 🙂

We could talk about the Church. 🙂

We could talk about forum rules. :hmmm:

We could talk about each other. 😦
I wanna talk about me

I wanna talk about I

I wanna talk about #1 oh my me my

😉

St. John Eudes:
"The most evident mark of God’s anger, and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world, is manifest when He permits His people to fall into the hands of a clergy who are more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds. They abandon the things of God to devote themselves to the things of the world and, in their saintly calling of holiness, they spend their time in profane and worldly pursuits. When God permits such things, it is a very positive proof that He is thoroughly angry with His people and is visiting His most dreadful wrath upon them.”

I think if one leans liberal they believe PF is the best. If one leans conservative…not so much. Personally, PF reminds me of Obama and is scary to me.

I would like to ask PF why he is not showing mercy to the Dubia Cardinals in answering them and granting them an audience? Seems to me we are witnessing Our Lady of Akita’s warnings:

“The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres… churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.”

I don’t really know him well as a person; as a Pope, his public statements are far too confusing for me.

Christi pax.

Pope Francis is the most Christian Pope I’ve ever seen. In that he seems to preach that active working Christian love and self-sacrifice.
