I’m just wondering whether or not he is, since I see him called Pope Blessed Urban II and I was wondering whether or not he’s called Blessed as part of a canonization process?

I don’t know if there is anything more recent concerning his cause for sainthood but the article on “Pope Bl. Urban II” in old Catholic Encyclopedia says he was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on July 14, 1881.

Would you think he’d ever be accorded sainthood?
He might, who knows? I think the Church might get some flack with the Crusade controversy, but I mean, the Church shouldn’t play by the rules of society and really I doubt most people know he initiated the first Crusade, many people aren’t truly educated on the Crusades today.

Is it only one miracle he needs before he is accorded sainthood?

Generally what happens when a person has been beatified for a long time, but not proclaimed a saint, is that those promoting their cause for sainthood have died and no one taken up the cause. In essence their cause is “mothballed” and placed into the archives with no further action.

For Pope Urban II to be canonized it would require a group take up his cause with the Congregation for the Causes of Saints again. I don’t know how difficult it is, but one of the reasons so many canonized saints are religious is that their order persisted in their cause. It is why you see relatively few “ordinary” laymen canonized; there is not a long term stable group to continue promoting their cause.

If people started being devoted to him, and asked for miracles, and if God granted a verifiable miracle, then sure, he could become a saint. He could become a saint any day.

As we have seen in the case of St. Angela of Foligno and of St. Peter Faber in Pope Francis’ reign, and of St. Hildegarde of Bingen in Pope Benedict’s reign, it is also possible that a pope can just waive the miracle requirement (or rather, take into account all the miracles that happened before the verification process, and the general agreement of the Church’s faithful that these people are saintly), and declare the person a saint.

But good Pope Urban is not a saintly celebrity today, even though there apparently used to be lots of miracles at his tomb. So I don’t think I’ll hold my breath.

OTOH, in a world full of Muslim terrorists, it’s possible that Blessed Pope Urban will become a lot more popular. (Hey, you looked him up!) If people start to ask him to intercede and get obvious answers, we might see some action.

I’m very interested in the Crusades you see, I learned about them from a great YouTube channel called Real Crusades History; it also talks about wars such as the Reconquista in Spain and opened my eyes to Isabella I of Castile, who is called Servant of God I believe.

Amen.

I think we need a little more Pope Urban in this day and age, because we’re facing a very similar jihad that Christians did in Urbans day. He rallied the Catholics to save themselves and their lands, and they did. I think that alone is worthy of sainthood…

Blessed Urban II, pray for us! Awaken us from our slumber!:gopray:

When you think about it, he really did save Western Christendom; him and Charles Martel at the Battle of Tours and we all know who Charles Martel is grandfather, the one and only Carolus Magnus, Charlemagne!

He absolutely did.

For some 3 centuries Christians were being slaughtered, sold into slavery, raped, and heavily taxed by marauding Moslems who had conquered much of Europe before Pope Urban came onto the scene to rally Catholics to defend themselves.

We are facing something similar today, and I hope we have a voice similar to Urban’s when the time comes…

I mean no offence against our Pontiff, but Francis is never going to be that Pope; if anything, he is the exact opposite of Urban II.

I agree.

I pray that his soft, pastoral, ecumenical tone can change our enemies hearts, but I harbor serious doubts that that is possible…😦

I’ve no problem with ecumenism, as long as it isn’t a watering down of Catholic teachings or doctrine.

:hmmm: Erm why has a thread on Urban II turned into a Francis-bashing thread?

Don’t be so sensitive.

We are living in a very similar situation now that Urban faced in his day, so a comparison is natural…

I do not mean to attack Pope Francis at all, I’m just remarking how different the two men were in outlook to a problem that plagued Urban and could potentially plague Francis. Forgive me if it seemed so!

You weren’t attacking him and neither was I. Some folks on CAF think it is their responsibility to come to Francis’s aid whenever they feel he is being slighted, even when he is not.

You are correct, the problem Urban faced can happen in Francis’s papacy to. Catholics are sleeping today on this problem and there does need to be an awakening.

I have never prayed to Pope Urban before, but he might be exactly the saint we need to petition to for that great awakening, Thank you for this thread, it has given me a lot to think about:)

No problem my friend; Catholics need to come out of this self-inflicted loathing for their history molded by errant history books. Without the Crusades, there’s be no Catholicism, no Holy Roman Church. Our Lord Christ said that His Church would never fall; the Crusades fulfilled that promise. However, I recognize the Fourth Crusade and the sacking of Constantinople was the sour point of them all.
