Is prayer a form of "white magick"?

A friend of mine believes in and practices rituals meant to manipulate spiritual energy. I told him that, as a Catholic, I was uncomfortable with this because such practices are wrong. He then explained I ought not let it bother me because prayer to God is actually a form of “white magic.”

He then went on to explain that there is nothing wrong with we as humans using our own spiritual energy to get the results we want. Black magic, he explained, is merely the power humans have within themselves. White magic, the kind I supposedly practice as a Christian, is using divine power for the ends I wish to achieve.

While I still feel really uneasy, I don’t know how to counter his argument and explain why prayer is NOT something to be associated with magical ability, and why what he’s practicing is indeed wrong.

Max,
