I understand the Catholic teaching is that when Catholics pray to saints, they are asking for their intercession like they would a friend or pastor. How am I to understand prayers like this one to St. Joseph?
“Protect the Holy Father, our sovereign pontiff, and all bishops and priests united with him. Be the protector of all who labor for souls amid the trials and tribulations of this life, and grant that all peoples of the world may follow Christ and the Church he founded.”
Asking a friend to pray for me is very different from asking a friend to 'be the protector of all who labor for souls."
