When someone who has a civil law marriage waiting to have it blessed in the Church expected to give up procreation relations? I know that the sacrament of the eucharist is not allowed before the Church validates the marriage, and I know that after the Church validates the marriage you must go to confession and have your moral sins and venial sins absolved to receive the eucharist, but,is procreation really wrong when you have a civil marriage unblessed in the church when you are trying to make things right?

Dear W,

To have intercourse with someone outside of a valid marriage is a mortal sin. It is acting as if one is married when one is not. It is a very serious lie. Certainly, it is by God’s design that children come into this world as the result of the holy act that MARRITAL intercourse is. Such sexual intercourse is designed to be a physical expression of the vows that were made at the altar.

By all means, get your hands on the book, “Good News About Sex and Marriage” by Christopher West. You can order it by phone (888 291 8000) or through the “Shop” tab on catholic.com. It puts all things into perspective and answers a lot of questions that you may still have—even without being aware of it.

You are both in my prayers.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
