A friend who is concerned about the subject asked me this question: If you listen to music that has profanity in it, is that a sin, and do you go to hell for it?
One only goes to hell for unrepented mortal sin. Mortal sin requires grave matter, full knowledge, and full and free consent of the will; if any of the conditions are missing, there is not a mortal sin (cf. CCC 1857).
