ESL speakers frequently speak better than native-speakers too. I worked with people from Chile, Russia and Romania; they used flawless grammar in both their speech and writing.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks that way either!

Here’s another beef of mine: words that do not exist! Some examples are: “alot” “infact” and “eachother.”

I can understand splitting an infinitive. I can understand ending a sentence with a preposition. I can certainly understand making a typo. What I can’t abide is mistakes a third grader shouldn’t make. Isn’t grammar taught in school anymore?

I can also relax with split infinitives ("…to boldly go…" just sounds better than “…to go boldly…”) and ending sentences with prepositions, to a limited degree (e.g. “What is that pointing to?” = ok. “Do you know where the library is at?” = not ok).

My mother’s native language is not English.

I somehow have learned to have a patient ear for all people of all languages because of this.

I was offended by the tone of this thread, and hope you all realize that being just like you is not something Jesus gives a hoot about.

First of all, if your mother is in the United States, I hope she has taken the effort to learn English at least.

Second, why be offended about things that deserve utmost attention? The OP called for no one to be just like him. He only called for everyone to write properly. As for Jesus giving a hoot, everyone should realize that they are posting here for their beliefs, which is part of honoring Jesus. The very least they can do is post properly.

We have to keep in mind that not everybody has the skill/education to use correct grammer or express themselves clearly. Should we expect these people to avoid posting? Is it not arrogant to expect everyone to have the same abilities as myself**?

** Here’s an example of not knowing which word/phrase to use. Should I have waited to post until I after I had checked on correct usage?

I may have gone a bit off topic on my previous post. I have one opinion on use of correct grammar & another on Scripture notation. Yes, I believe proper Scripture notation is important for credibility purposes & is important if someone wants to verify what you’ve quoted.

Not everyone will tell you that they are downloading your post to a CD, or printing it off for a scrapbook.

I knew some students once who kept a scrapbook of every strange thing said in the class, either by their “fav” classmate or the lovely teacher. There it was, immortalized.

All I would ask is that people take the time to do their very best. The basics of the English language are taught by the sixth grade (age 11), and the age limit of this Forum is 13, so everyone here who is a native English speaker has the skills. All we have to do is use them.

This is not the telephone, or instant chat. You have all the time you need to do the best job you can - I will still be here to read your message tomorrow, or even next week, since I’m on e-mail notification. There is no rush, so why should you not take the time to double-check your grammar?

I agree on the “if you’re trying to change my mind about something” comment. However, in my very extemely ultra humble opinion, I don’t think a person should have to wait and post until all grammatical elements have been checked and corrected.

By the way jmcrae, I’m having fun with this thread & am enjoying the comments & bantering.

I admire all you who are able to speak & write in grammatically correct sentences. :bowdown: Unfortunately, you’re an endangered species. If only grammatically correct posts were allowed imagine how few posts we’d have.

The correct form is “wait to post.” I am not trying to be picky. I just happen to be looking at an MLA style manual. I wanted to list a source of a quotation properly in a post I made in another thread.
