Is purgatory an outdated idea?

I am having a discussion with my brother who tells me that no one teaches the doctrine of purgatory to our children in religion class anymore. He said to ask any priest or ccd teacher and I would learn that purgatory is an outdated idea. True or False?

Not only is purgatory not an outdated idea, it is a “de fide” dogma that all Catholics are obliged to accept. See these tracts on the subject:
