Dear Sirs,
Biblical references to purgatory all seem to be based on what Christ said or did before He resurrected. But, once Christ was the arisen Christ, did not everything change? He gave us the gift of salvation. That is it. This is everything. Why do we need to concern ourselves with words, and more words and concepts such as “we need the process of further sanctification”. To think that we need more, that we need to be subjected to a cleansing fire, would dilute Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for each one of us who believe in Him, would it not? Also, it is true that Christ himself never discouraged people from praying for the dead, but he had not yet died for our sins. His death for our sins changed everything, it was the ultimate redemption for us, right? I became a full Catholic 3 years ago, and just today, a Protestant friend was asking me about purgatory. I tried my hardest to represent Catholic doctrine to her, but I am afraid that I found myself unsettled about it and needing a better understanding.
