I have always wondered if purgatory is physically painful. I’m not sure if the soul can actually feel physical pain; perhaps it’s just psychological pain?

If there is disembodied perception, it would work as in dreaming, where our mind (which is a dimension of our soul) sees, hears, moves, etc, without using using the eyes, ears or limbs of our bodies.

So there could indeed be pain that is perceived as physical even though the nerve endings are left in one’s dead human body.

In any case, Purgatory is likely to be only the telescopic instant of movement from human body to eternal embodiment (pneumatikon soma).

St. Maria Fausina had visited Purgatory and asked the Holy Souls what was their greatest suffering? They had answered in one voice their greatest torment was longing for God. If you really want to know what exactly is going on is this longing for love. In Purgatory after death is this love which will increase in you more until you receive it in its fullness to give God His due Praise, Glory, Worship and Thanksgiving.

Pax Christi.

The longing for God is the worst but not the only torment.

Even without a physical body, for many it is horrible and apparently long-lasting.

The Poor Souls have one message for us: GET! US! OUT! OF! HERE! - PLEASE!

God bless.

Read Saint Catherine of Genoa’s account of her vision of Purgatory.

May God bless you abundantly and forever! 🙂
