Is race research immoral regarding intelligence?

I remember reading a book called The Bell Curve, and its thesis argues that one cannot permanently help the poor and most Black and Hispanic people because they are not intelligent (and they argue that intelligence is largely influenced by heredity). I am afraid that such a book will reverse the substantial gains in civil rights that the African Americans gained in the 1960s. I also fear that this book might influence some conservative politicians to cut spending on programs for the poor such as food stamps and WIC. I fear that books such as The Bell Curve will revive cruel policies such as eugenics.

I must add that The Bell Curve literally gives me nightmares (they usually depict scenarios where people mistreat those who obtained a low score on the Progressive Matrices). I do not see any potential benefit that can be derived from this type of research. All it does is just evoke bitter emotions, and justify negative stereotypes against certain ethnic groups.

Is their any justification for this type of “scientific” inquiry? Even if The Bell Curve’s data is correct, I think books of its kind should not be published because they threaten the pursuit of social justice.

The problem is we make stereotypes and then we cram ourselves into them. Look at modern hip-hop and rap. You have all these black singers acting like uneducated pimps and then saying “I’m just trying to keep it real”, insinuating that all black men are uneducated pimps. Then when we see black men who are quite intelligent and successful, we say “That guy isn’t REALLY black!” Then I see some black kid in my class trying to look like a gangsta and he sleeps through class, then complains when he fails the test. He isn’t stupider than me. I don’t have the advantage because I’m white. I just stay awake through class and take notes, therefore I learned and he didn’t, but he could have.

The fact is that I have seen no real proof that race has anything to do with smarts. Anyone can be taught. If you have two people without any brain abnormalities, there is no way to say who will be smarter based on race, gender, hair color, eye color, sexual orientation, whatever.

Part of it is environment. If you are from a poor family, your family members have probably not had the opportunity to be educated as much as a rich family. Therefore you don’t have other people at home to discuss questions with and to challenge you further. So a richer person with an educated family could learn more faster simply because they are being exposed to more information.

We really need to get beyond this whole idea that people from different places are different species. We’re all just humans and earthlings. We don’t work that differently.

Uh-oh. I’m getting that group-hug feeling! :eek:

Eugenics isn’t dead. This pretty college girl I met’s mother was told by the doctor that she should be aborted because she tested positive for Down Syndrome. (It was a false positive, which they found out when she was born perfectly healthy.) I have read an interesting essay written by a doctor who treats genetic diseases and she has seen her younger business decrease dramatically with the advent of prenatal testing. The doctors don’t go back in time and prevent the couple from having sex, they kill the children.

Likewise Planned Parenthood focuses its business in poor working class areas. They advertise and coerce young vulnerable women in order to make a quick dollar, convert a person to a future abortion advocate, and to solve their “racial problem” (Planned Parenthood’s founder, Margaret Sanger believed in eugenics, as did many intellectuals and elites of the time.)

A quick search of the internet pulled up some interesting statistics.
CNS News:
“For every five African-American women who get pregnant, three have an abortion,” Clenard Childress Jr., director of the Northeast Chapter of the Life Education And Resource Network, told the Cybercast News Service.

– Since 1973, more than twice as many blacks have died from abortion than from heart disease, cancer, accidents, violent crimes and AIDS combined;

– Blacks make up about 12 percent of the population in the United States but account for 32 percent of the abortions; and

– About 1,450 black infants are aborted every day in this country.

Since about one-third of all abortions are performed on black women, the abortion industry has received over $4 billion from the African-American community, he noted.

That’s some news that would make venomous racists such as Charles Murray very ecstatic. Richard Herrnstein must be dancing in his grave. Personally, most manifestations of eugenics makes me ill.
