We are new to our parish (just moved to the area) and this past weekend the priest said “receive Jesus Christ” instead of “The Body of Christ” when handing out the eucharist. Is this ok?
Thank you,
Regina in Oregon

Dear Regina,

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal states in #117: “…he raises the Eucharistic bread slightly and shows it to each one, saying: ‘The body of Christ.’ The communicants reply: ‘Amen’ and holding the communion plate under their chin, receive the sacrament.”

The Liturgy is not private property. No one individual (including the priest) has the right or authority change the words according to taste or whim.
