Hello, I usually abstain from meat on Fridays…I know the American rule is you can replace the act with anothoer form of penance.

Question: is reciting the rosary good enough? How about if I get up really early in the AM (like 3:30 ) and pray the ROsary and Chaplet of Divine Mercy? I work tommorrow so there is no way I can perform one of those “corporal” acts of mercy. Unless I drop $20 into the mailbox to some chairity? Anyone…anyone?

The Church is not trying to be onerous in the issue. Giving up something is good; generally it is perceived that doing something positive is better.

Given the fact that you are doing anything is good, as most people lack any awareness of the issue.

And keep in mind that God doesn’t play “gotcha”.

I usually pray the rosary on Friday though so I guess that I cannot use that one. How about dropping 50 bucks into the mailbox to Fr. Grochels chairity?

I am not sure that the fact that you say it on Friday has a lot to do with whether or not you use that as a substitute for not eating meat. The Church said to do something else, but I don’t recall that it said that you had to be creative and find something else that you were not already doing. If the intent is that you offer the rosary as a means of honoring the day of His death, I would think that the rule would be well satisfied.

Having grown up in an age where abstinence was more honored in the “I’ll go to hell if I don’t do it” fashion than in a sacrificial giving, I would say that you are light years ahead of many, if not most Catholics pre-rule change.

As a previous poster said, God doesn’t play “gotcha.”

In the United States, a substitute for meat abstinence can be an “act of piety.” The Rosary certainly qualifies. It shouldn’t matter if you do it daily. Many people don’t even bother to have any prayer time at all. The important thing is that on Friday, you are doing your act of piety as your Friday Penance.
