So what’s the solution? The solution is to let go of all of these thoughts and ideals and recognize that nothing is going to make you ultimately happy or make all of your problems go away: this life is the only thing that you have, and the only reason you’re ever unhappy with it is because of the motions of your mind. The first step is to learn to see through the motions of your mind, and then, slowly, you stop being fooled by it.
A cool technique if you’re arty is to really look at things and try to gauge how you would replicate the colors with just red, yellow, blue, white and black pigments. For example, tree bark is brown, right? But close up some has molds that are shocking pink, day-glo orange or ultra-marine blue. White clouds are actually slightly yellow or blue. White things are very rarely pure white, black things rarely pure black.

Do it as an exercise for 15 minutes each day, during which the concentration means you can’t help but take a holiday from your past and future, and after a while your vision becomes re-sensitized and everything appears in glorious Technicolor.

In one way or another it’s always good to leave our own little world a while and touch the present moment. Which is where God lives (or however you want to explain it).
