Hello,

I was wondering if it’s morally right for a married catholic couple to role play when having sex?

Thanks,

Nelson

No,

It removes the dignity of the marital act by objectifying one another. A spouse is not a tool to be used for gratitification. The idea is mutual reciprocity and becoming one with your spouse. This becomes impossible when role playing alows people to act out fantasies verses being truely vulnerable to each other. You actualy hurt each other on a spiritual level by doing this and damage the relationship. A study on theology of the body will exlpain it more for you.

Depends. Does it involve Pokemon cards or Harry Potter?

And I thought the thread was going to be about Dungeons and Dragons or something.

My opinion is that it would depend totally on the intentions and the specific facts.

I would agree. I don’t see why it would be a problem for a husband and wife to use their imaginations and be creative, as long as it was based on love and mutual respect for their actual persons.

I beg to differ. Studies have to shown that marriages incorparated Dungeons and Dragons into daily life are 20% more likely to last. Scientist have proven this.

I would agree. If the man or woman pretend that their spouse is actually another person I would think that this would be a sin. But if they simply imagine their ownselves in different scenarios, I can’t see how this would be wrong or how it would be objectionifing the other person.

If roleplaying means pretending your spouse is someone else then yes…roleplaying would be a mortal sin. It seems that roleplaying means lusting after someone else while in the marital embrace with your spouse. How could that not be sinful?

Role playing? are you talking about drama?

Well I have my drama performance this friday… and I’m acting as a Jehovah’s Witness with Watchtower magazines and all lol.

…now that’s not a sin is it? 😃

I would agree if “pretending your spouse is someone else” means say that I am imagining that my spouse is my neighbor or a celebrity (and especially so if I am doing that on my own).
I see nothing wrong with mutual and mutually agreed roleplaying where, for example, the couple acts as if they are in another time or place.

I still don’t quite get what “role playing” is, but if it only involves you and your spouse and all it amounts to is imagining you are in another time or place I don’t see what would be wrong with it.

This may be a better question to ask your priest or one of the apologists on staff here at CA.

This I agree with. Without getting into too much detail, lets say a woman has fantasies of her hubby rescuing her. So, occasinally before bed she fantasizes about him rescueing her from all types of odd, silly places-pirate ships, castles etc. and then rewarding him afterwards. I can’t imagine this being a sin, as it is still the hubby who is doing the imaginary rescueing and not some stranger.

IF thought she begins to see Brad Pitt instead of her hubby or ask him to pretend to be Brad Pitt then that would be a sin.

And even *more *likely if you can make a saving throw against 2d12.

Although you have to take a -5 on that roll if the couple are mixed-class (such as a paladin and a thief).
