St. Nicholas of Myra most likely seemed very appealing to many European pagans, who thought he sounded even better than their gift-giving and wish-granting gods, who didn’t really exist. But in their enthusiasm at their conversion perhaps they got the smaller details confused. And then when people gave poor people gifts anonymously the elements of those stories got added in. The poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” in the 19th Century added some parts. And Santa is seen differently by different people even now. If you look at the costumes in a shop you see so many takes on his appearance it’s funny we recognize them as the same character.:shrug:But St. Nicholas is known for being more concerned about people in tough straits than about children who want the latest video games, so the kind of Santa in most Christmas toy ads doesn’t exist.
